if I eat too much sugar, real sugar, I will get gas and loose stools. If you have an allergy to soy products, and it's in EVERYTHING, that will do it too. Find out what kind of food allergens you may have. Mine are soy, peanuts. Most processed foods have lots if sugar or "fake"sweeteners, fructose, alcohol sugars,it goes on and on. Get a good about about IBS and allowable and not allowable foods. It helped me a lot in the beginning.

Yes, it's good to discover what is the culprit with our IBS. I am OK on sugar, but not so with artificial sweeteners! I am also OK on honey, but that is high Fodmap and many can't tolerate it.

My main problem seems to be -skins on anything! I have started trying to eat black grapes, and always have to peel them, but the last few days thought I'd try only half peeling them and see what happened because I'd like my body to get used to gradual slightly raised insoluble fibre intake again (like I always used to eat for many years). First day or two -fine. Then I started to get cramps like trapped wind.

It's not the fructose, as peeled they are ok for me. It's the skins. Same with potato skins even the very thin ones on new potatoes, and the skins on chickpeas for example.

I haven't used the artificial sugars but a few years ago I tried tonic water with agave sweetener. I was surprised that it triggered an IBS attack every time. So I avoid that one too. But cane sugar is fine.

Has anyone ever tried coconut sugar? I tried it once at a friend's, and it tasted gorgeous, and didn't upset my belly the next day. I just ate a large teaspoonful.

Yes, I use it for some things. I also have coconut flour courtesy of Lidl.
