Yes, functional bowel problems. Constipation predominant / slow transit / overflow diarrhea. Have had all the possible examinations to exclude other bowel related problems but everything okay. And now I've been diagnosed (working diagnose) with dysautonomia too. In the past also diagnosed with MDD and GAD. Still think it's all caused because of dysbiosis in my bowel (started probably around 50 years ago). Now trying propionate, a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) to help to regulate the microbiome in my colon. Just started with a low dosage so can't tell if it's helping with my symptoms.
Hi Timster, I have IBS, suffered from it for well over 15 years now, I also used to have IBS-C and severe cramp pains with trapped wind, until I changed my diet. The biggest impact was dropping dairy, the change was almost immediate. I've always been into health and working out, and switching to plant-based dairy immediately removed the C. This was only assisted when I moved to a fully plant-based diet.
While that won't be for everyone, I've had friends that simply cut out the dairy and only ate white meat or fish, and had the same effect.
IBS is incredibly frustrating, and it's only bloating with the very rare cramp pains I ever get now. Hope you find something that works for you.
Hi timster73 I have had IBS for over 30 years going between constipation and diarrhoea, then I found out about the different fibres, there are two fibres soluble and insoluble soluble soak up the liquid in the colon while insoluble don’t, look on www,wsh.nhs.uk web site fibre.
I also can’t tolerate tap water I have to use bottles spring water, if my constipation get to bad I use lactose,I am also diabetic and it’s very sweet but I can use it as it don’t have sugar in it.
I think once you start to follow a balanced diet of the fibres things will get better. If you want to see how fibre works put some food in a jar fill with warm water and leave over night, insoluble fibre with still be like it was when you put it in the jar like sweet corn, soluble fibre will have soaked up the liquid and be solid like oats soak up your milk, imagine if you eat to much soluble fibre it clogs up your colon as it soaks up all the liquid, I have found a mixture of both is what is needed to keep things moving smoothly through the colon.
I grow my own veg and I found that when certain veg was ready in the garden I was getting diarrhoea when the cabbage was ready I was eating a lot more, cabbage is insoluble so it was not soaking up any liquid so my diarrhoea would kick in, now I make sure to have root veg with my green as a lot of root veg are soluble.
I swap around different remedies but at the moment it's Milk of Magnesia. If I stick to one med my body seems to get used it and does not work
So Senna Laxido MofM on alternate weeks seems to help
Here's one who's had it for 40+ years on and off. Had a bout with diverticulitis in there as well. Right now, it's fairly under control with methylcellulose, docusate, probiotics, daily exercise & a healthy, high-fiber diet.
