Is it a hypnotism thing?

Yes, it is.

I'm on week 5, day 6. I find it really relaxing. It has helped me to cope better with my symptoms. I had a wobble for a few days, but I find the sessions really help me to relax.

How long have you had IBS for?

Maureen1958 profile image
Maureen1958 in reply to Readingnana

I've had IBS for 35 years now, I think it is just a part of me and nothing will help!

20 years, but I only sought treatment 3 years ago when my symptoms became more intense. The nerva app hasn't eliminated my symptoms, but it does help with my anxiety, which helps me to cope better.

My symptoms have always been intense since the day it started. When it started it was probably 3/4 days a week but after I had my son, who is 29 in a couple of weeks, it has been everyday! In the end you hardly remember what feeling normal feels like! It's just constant pain, nausea and feeling like you need the loo!

Are you dairy, yeast or wheat intolerant? I have had IBS for 45 years. The first 7 of those were horrific but then I discovered I was lactose/dairy intolerant. I still had IBS but at least cutting out the dairy did help a lot. I then discovered I was yeast, sunflower oil and dextrose intolerant. If you have multiple intolerances it's difficult to discover them other than having tests. I wonder if you have intolerances? I was told by a dietician 4 years ago not to eat fruit. That helped too. I tried the low Fodmap diet but can't eat most of the foods on it so my diet is extremely limited but it does mean a lot less pain.

Try a diet of chicken, carrots, eggs, farleys baby rusks in soy milk for breakfast. do not eat porridge! Water biscuits are good and if you absolutely must eat fruit then just have half of a banana. It's a boring diet but if rather that than be doubled up in pain.

I don't think mine is food related although I have things I avoid or only eat a little of. It seems more to do with the consistency than actual foods. I am fine with dairy and wheat but don't eat much fruit or vegetables. I have done tests but I didn't agree with their results. I think, like lots of things, they are a con! It said I shouldn't have dairy but dairy is my go to. I avoid soya so couldn't have the soy milk but I have tried all the different milks there are and am a better off with dairy. I think my problem is something else.

Oh that's a shame. I found it helped me a lot...but i did have to stick with it. It's a longish process. Time will tell huh? I hope it helps soon.

I read this thread with interest. But I have the opposite problem..with the pain and Nausea. Do you have the pain and Nausea too?

SydneySider123 profile image

I don't no. Thankfully. My tummy just gets stuck and i lose my appetite. I'm grateful for no pain or nausea.

Thanks SydneySider123, I have it for another two months. I'll assess the situation then.

How are you doing, not seen you here for a while?!

Maureen1958 in reply to SydneySider123

Oh, just the same really. Although at this present moment no pain, no nausea and don't actually feel like I need to go to the toilet. But it won't last long so I am savouring the moment! :)

The 5 minutes of breathing exercises are the key to the whole program. If you're not doing them twice a day, you won't get the full benefits of the program. The deep breathing gets rid of most (not all) of the symptoms.

Maureen1958 profile image

I have a problem with their breathing exercises because they tell you to breath in through your nose but I have a problem with that, I think I broke my nose as a kid, as I can't get enough air through my nose. I also find it difficult to do breathing in and exhaling to certain numbers, I don't find it at all relaxing!

Then write Nerva and tell them about your breathing difficulties; maybe they'll have a useful suggestion. They are quite good about answering queries.

Okay perhaps I will, thanks.

I got an answer back from Nerva today saying "Hi Maureen - please do what feels most comfortable for you 😊"

I found it helped a bit , but it wasn’t a life changing amount & like you I got bored with the same sessions all the time . But hypnotherapy is a lot of repetition, which I’m not totally convinced about , I understand it works for some people but not everyone.

Hi there. I don't know if this will be helpful but here goes. I've had Ibs d for over 30years. As I've aged it's got worse. It got to a point that I dare not go out, especially after lunch and I was having episodes 3-5 a week. I spoke to a new doctor who recommended FODMAP. He said at least cut out everything Allium, so I did. I don't eat anything with the onion family, especially onion/garlic powder, which is in most processed foods. I spent weeks looking for stock cubes without those ingredients! Anyway to cut a very long story short, I now have to cook from scratch, not eat anyone elses food or go out for meals, although my go to meal if I go out is fish and chips, no mushy peas though!! It has changed my life around. I don't have any episodes anywhere as bad as I used to. I've had about six in a year and it always is after I've realised I'd had something new and it sneakily had onion powder in it hiding as 'flavourings'. I know we're all different but it this could help one more person then I'd be happy.

Hi, as I said to Carlettejaque, I don't think mine is what I eat although I tend to avoid onions, but thanks anyway for replying.

That's a great idea. I did the Fodmap a few times..but it is too restrictive. I felt hungry all the time. I asked my Gastroenterologist..and he said it's to be followed for a limited time..
