Sertraline

Last night I was prescribed sertraline for my anxiety. My anxiety is very much related to my IBS. I have also (finally!!) been referred to therapy and to see a dietician.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been prescribed sertraline? Has it helped? Did it make your symptoms worse? Any advice would be appreciated!

I have health anxiety which sets off my IBS. I have had 4 sessions of CBT with a therapist and in all honesty not sure if its helping. Its being able to manage your IBS and recognise its nothing serious which I find it hard to do.

Yes, I take Sertraline for anxiety. I think it has helped up to a point but I have also had CBT which also helped. The anxiety hasn't gone completely but it feels more under control. From time to time my GP has suggested increasing the dosage (I take 50mg a day), but I am a bit worried about taking more. Don't know why. Just another sign of anxiety! I hope it helps you. How much have you been prescribed? Let me know how you get on.

I have been on it for about 4 months . It seems to be working . I suppose everyone is different with anxiety and ibs ..be kind to yourself. Take one day at a time . Hugs to you

I took sertraline for anxiety and panic attacks and it helped the anxiety but didn’t affect the IBS. It had unpleasant side effects of dry mouth and difficulty sleeping, so I was happy to get off it.

I take it in a very small dosage (20 mg I think) and it has helped a little bit with anxiety but this hasn’t translated in less issues with IBS. In terms of sleeping I would recommend taking it in the morning so that it doesn’t affect your sleep but see what the doctor says. It’s hard to quantity but it’s worth giving it a try...

I have been offered it by my GP but was reluctant to take it as I knew my anxiety was triggered by my IBS so for me it didn't seem like a solution to my problems. If my anxiety does get bad no doubt I will consider it again. Trying the fodmap diet first.

I have been in sertraline since May/ June 2019 and it’s helped me so much. I have suffered for over 20 years with my anxiety and I’m annoyed with myself for starting treatment sooner as I wouldn’t have suffered like I have. Now I’m on it, I don’t feel like I am ruled by my anxiety/ PTSD anymore and can live life! Hope it works out for you. The side effects aren’t very nice at first but preserve and you will soon see the positive effects! I find it better to take at night as it made me feel tired.

How you getting on in your first few weeks on them? I felt so rough first couple weeks but once they kicked in wow the old me was back! Should never have fought it for so long! The weight gain is horrible 😬 just constantly hungry! Good luck 😉
