Heidelberg test

I was just wondering if anybody has had this test done it’s quite expensive £300 but it gives you answers there and then and usually about a week wait I can get it done in London as soon as next week is this a waste of money or will it finally give me the answers I’m looking for

Hi Leenol48 - I'm actually trying to find someone in the UK who does that test- may I ask if you know of any clinic that carries out the test please? thanks

Hi just wondering if any of you took this Heidelberg test. and if so what was the outcome? I was diagnosed last summer with H Pylori, GERD & Barretts Oesophagus. I took the standard medication of triple treatment then stayed on omeprazole. OMG I have been so ill since. Lost almost 3 stone in weight. Tummy constantly on fire, feel like a tightening around my torso. A Nutritional therapist said to me that as I have Hashimotos thyroid, that I could probably have low stomach acid, not high stomach acid? So I stopped taking the PPI's and have noticed an improvement but I'm still really poorly. I did the Bicarbonate soda test at home which indicated I do have low stomach acid. but before I go supplementing with HCI Betain I want to know for sure that it is low. I read the only test to confirm this is the Heidelberg Test. Problem for me I live in the North West and the only clinic I can find in UK is in London. Just wandered if the trip/expense would be worth it to me? Any info/help would be most appreciated.

Hi sorry to hear your not well I never actually got the test done as I was working away and then we went into lockdown but I would say if you can afford it then I would get it done, I’m hoping to book in again in the next week or so as I believe they have reopened hope you feel better soon

Hi just wandering if you went ahead with this Heidelberg test? As I live in the North West I am going to try the Betaine Pepsin capsule method first before travelling down to the London clinic. Would you please let me know if you haven progress with this.? I am still struggling massively with GERD. Although I feel much better than when I was taking PPI's. Many thanks

Hi I was informed about this from a nutritional therapist I am working with. Plus I also read about this in Izabella Wentz's book. Apparently GERD can be caused by low stomach acid as well as high stomach acid. Plus low stomach acid is common in Hashimotos patients. The Betaine Pepsin is a supplement which provides stomach acid if you are low in this. You introduce a capsule with each meal you have protein with to help the protein break down. Have a little read online about this. I am literally only just beginning with this trial myself. cheers

Ok good luck hope you feel better have you tried the baking soda test as a guideline

Yes I did last month over 3 days and it indicated I had low stomach acid. Obviously as the best method to confirm accuracy of this is the Heidelberg test, this was why I inquired about that, but was disappointed to find it is only done in London in the UK. Very difficult for me to access during these times. Hence trialing this alternative route next. I will keep you posted on any success.

many thanks

Hi so I ha the Heidelberg test done today I had two options to swallow the capsule with the not so thin thread or just the capsule but having to lie on my side for an hour or two so I went for just the capsule with no thread I’d don’t think that was going down easily she then syringed bicarbonate of soda in my mouth which was pretty foul but that measured by stomach acid levels that was a bit low but it kept going up and down which apparently is my pyloric sphincter opening and closing which shouldn’t be happening so that’s one problem she then squirted another bicarbonate of soda in my mouth after 4-5 minutes if you have high acid should go back to zero low is about 20 minutes after half an hour mine was at 4.3 so very low stomach acid another issue all in all the test was not too bad and I’m a worrier I parked at the clinic so it was free it was easy to find so if you can afford it I would definitely recommend it

Regards

Lee

Lee thanks so much for this info hopefully you can now begin to sort things right for you. I think I would prefer the test without the thread too. I have just had a stool sample done and have been advised I have dysbosis. So I am booked in with my nutritional therapist next week to discuss next steps/treatment. If this doesn't settle my GERD. I will definitely make the trip to this clinic in the summer & get confirmation on this for myself. As each time my gastro doc prescribes more PPIs. I feel like my tummy is on fire and my insides are going to burst out. Anyway best wishes for getting well quickly warm regards
