FAT ENZYMES For Bile acid malabsorbtion

Hi, does anyone take digestive enzymes to break down fats etching for malabsorbtion or any other issues for that matter?

If so, do they help & what product do you take?

I have recently received test stating my triglycerides are quite high. I keep fit by going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. I walk the dogs every day. I don't smoke or overly consume too much alcohol. I eat reasonably healthy.

I'm thinking that because I suffer with bile acid malabsorbtion/ Diahrrea, that I am unable to digest fats properly & the possible reason for my tri's being high is because of this & that fats enter my blood stream more easily than normal folk.

Can anyone clarify this or she'd any thoughts as i'm thinking of getting some lipase enzymes?

I couldn’t believe it when I opened my emails this morning and read your post. I found out yesterday that my triglycerides are high but all my cholesterol levels are normal. I’m convinced that I have bile acid malabsorption and I’m seeing a gastro in July to be tested. Reading online this morning I was wondering whether there is a link between the two & was going to post on this forum. Do you take anything for your bam? I’m really intrigued to find out if this is all connected in some way!!

Hey, yeah I am supposed to take a bile binding medication called Colesevelam. This has been no use to me whatsoever & actually makes my bam worse!!

I was first diagnosed with bam about 4 years ago. A while after being prescribed Colesevelam (about 18 months), I got another appointment with Gastro & doubted to him that bam is actually not what i felt i had. I was tested again & again it was positive for bam. After another positive test for bam I decided to try having another go at the Colesevelam with a more strict regime & more of the medication. It ended in tatters & my 'D' was much worse & due to the stomach pains that kicked in I ended up in hospital twice. Once via A&E & a few days later via ambulance.

I was treated with two bags of iv electrolytes to rehydrate my system then kicked out.

By chance I came across another type of malabsorbtion (Streatorrhea) which i now believe is the one i have.

Streatorrhea is treated with iv electrolytes (Wow🤔) if dehydration gets bad. Other treatments are ppi's (Lansoprazole/ Omeprazole), Fat bursting enzymes & Prescribed fish oils.

I was Gobsmacked to come across Streatorrhea....

Days before I ended up in hospital I had said to myself I was going to do without my Lansoprazole. I also upped my Colesevelam & after this I had an extreme flare up which now looking back & seeing this Streatorrhea I am adamant this is what I have.

The only reason I taken Lansoprazole in the first place was because of reflux & totally unrelated to bam.

It seems being back on the Lansoprazole & staying away from Colesevelam is doing the job as i have been great for a couple of weeks now🤞

Maybe the reason that you too have high triglycerides & the fact that Streatorrhea is treated with fat digesting enzymes could well be the awnser to us having normal Cholesteral but high blood triglycerides.

The fat from our food is being absorbed directly into our blood stream & cannot absorb it due to our malabsorbtion problems seems to me a plausible reason.

It's gonna be a big hill to climb to persuade these gp's to prescribe me enzymes & approved high dosage fish oils as none of my gp's have a clue!!!

I have since bought myself a good omega 3 fish oil capsule as these have been proven to reduce triglycerides.

I've got more bloods to get taken soon which is to look at the liver because my triglycerides are high.

Maybe you should highlight some of this to your Gastro when you next see him .

I’m sorry that the Colesevelam doesn’t work. I was banking on getting something like that to solve all my problems!!! I am also on Lansoprazol for reflux, how weird!!! I can’t say that they make a whole lot of difference to me though. Do you have trouble with eating/swallowing at times & have to be sick to clear what feels like a blockage?? That’s what happens to me. I feel it’s related to my hiatus but I don’t know. I’m waiting for an endoscopy. I was hoping to have it before I see the gastro on 4 July!! You sound like you’ve been through the mill & back. It’s terribly debilitating isn’t it!
