Ibs to bile salt malabsorbtion

I had i b s since 2007 and i had to have my gall bladder removed in 2014, after seeing the surgeon i stated will this make my i b s worse, he said niether worse or better, however i had to get it done as i was in agony.

After surgery it got far worse and after seeing a professor at the royal free london i was told i contracted bile salt mal apsorbtion after surgery, he said 1 in 200 get this after gall bladder removal.

I wasnt told this before the op but however he gave me COLESTID in sachets you take a sachet before you eat and all i can say is Wow. This has given me my life back, before i could not go far away from a toilet due to chronic diareah.

Im on these sachets rest of my life but you can have these even if you just have l b s so why not give them a try see your gp. COLESTID.

Thanks for posting this, but most GPs don't hand this stuff out that easily!

I totally agree with you and good for your doctor for being "up" on this med!!! It is truly a life saver! I take Colestipol (6 tablets: 3 twice a day) and I, too, have my life back! I suffered for years and years with chronic diarrhea and no doctor knew anything about these meds! Finally, I decided to research it and found out about bile acid malabsorption! Gads! Why do they not just prescribe these drugs for everyone who has diarrhea!! Couldn't hurt. Another one that is good is Welchol, but here in the States, it's more expensive than the other 2.

Nice to hear its worked for you to. In england if your over 60 you get meds free and lucky i am to as the amount i take for various other probs i prob wouldnt be able to afford it.

I agree with you it should be more readily available no gp offered me this until i was lucky to have seen a professor at the hospital who has since retired.

Good luck to all that has this prob as its embarassing can be degrading and can completely ruin your life unless you are lucky enuf to find sum help.

Wow! That's awesome that you get free meds if you are over 60!!!! Wish it was that way in the US, but unfortunately, seniors are worth very little here...we get no help whatsoever from anyone...oh well!

We are pleased that it's helping you. However, everyone's IBS is different and what works for one person may not work for another.

Hi I had my gallbladder removed years ago and I have had IBS c for quite a few years and 2 years ago was diagnosed with diverticulitis I have always thought that not having a gallbladder caused a lot of my stomach problems but doctors never seem to agree and don't take IBS serious enough The only thing I have been offered is mebeverin Would it work with ibs c Thanks for the input

Im unsure if that would work im not trained in any way to advise. I could only advise of my past experiences. However your correct ibs isnt taken that seriously i dont think and doctors etc tend to stick to each other in agreement and of course once they done ur gall bladder op its bound to have nothing to do with what they done eh ? ?

No one told me having mine removed it would or could lead to bile salt malabsorbtion yet 1 in 200 contract it said he after i had the op !
