I’m so fed up

Honestly, it’s got to the point where I want to cry out of frustration. I can’t eat ANYTHING without suffering. The only time I’m ok is in the morning when I eat cereal. I have a milkshake for lunch as three meals have proven too much. I don’t know what to do anymore.

ps; please don’t suggest FODMAP or a vegan diet - I’ve tried FODMAP and I’m intolerant to fruit and veg.

Thank you x

Hi lilrose, when you have your cereal and milk shakes are these with cow's milk?

in reply toMaureen1958

semi skimmed but yes. I’m fine with milk btw.

Maureen1958 profile image
Maureen1958 in reply to

Do you make your own milkshake or is it a ready made one?

in reply toMaureen1958

My mother makes it for me💗It’s a nesquick one

Maureen1958 profile image
Maureen1958 in reply to

Few thoughts about your milkshake. I just happened to have some nesquick in the cupboard so had a look at ingredients. The first one is sugar, so as it's the first one on the list it probably has a high sugar content. Some people have a problem with too much sugar. Also I was wondering if, even though you are OK with diary, you may be pushing it by having too much milk, ie breakfast and lunch. Sometimes you can be OK with a certain amount of something but if you go overboard on one thing it can sometimes push you over the edge. Just a thought. I know you said you can't have fruit but how are you with bananas, you could perhaps mix them with milk like a milkshake or in a bowl with a smaller amount of milk. Like i say, just a thought.

in reply toMaureen1958

Oh ok.

I appreciate the advice. It’s just hard to find what suits my stomach and I’m really getting annoyed with it I feel like I can’t win lol. I’ll definitely try that. I think I’m ok with like half a banana

I know how you feel, I am constantly changing what I eat. I go for a while with something and it seems to be OK and then all of a sudden I think, "hang-on this doesn't seem to be working now". I am always changing the times that I eat too. At the moment I don't eat anything until after 4pm usually, sometimes it may even by 6pm or later which in turn means I don't get my main meal until about 10pm. Crazy isn't it but I just do what I have to do to get through the day and get done what needs to be done.

Maureen, lilrose, Sophie..just some thoughts. I was doing this too..maybe eating one meal..or if I felt good maybe two meals a day. I would be so hungry, but so afraid of "cramping" or if the food was "heavy" like hoagies, wraps, I was afraid of the food sitting in my colon..not being able to have a bowel movement for days..then knowing I would take my weekly stimulant laxative, Senna on Sunday's, I would eat more, like say, Friday and Saturday..sometimes relying on coffee in mornings just to have some sort of movement, even if little, better than nothing. Not healthy at all..I know. Since starting Seroquel, my cramping has stopped completely, but constipation continues and I have a "fear" of eating large or heavy meals, or "this or that". I went and saw a dietician for the first time (I'm to see her monthly, to try to start eating three meals a day, and to get to my goal weight from 119lbs, to 145lbs) and showed her what I ate..which was not good at all..too little, no consistency, and eating at different times each day, throws our system out of whack. She said that our bodies and digestion need "consistency" and to try to eat three meals a day..or maybe spread it out to smaller meals a day, and not eat after 8pm, as just as we get tired, so do our digestive systems. After 8pm..our digestive system (like us) is in "sleep mode" and once we start getting ready to lie down, it stops "working" at digesting food, as it has been digesting all day. She told me cereal with milk that many people have as a bedtime snack, is too difficult for our digestive systems after 8pm. As milk (and cereal) needs a lot of bile, and enzymes to digest. She said a "very light snack" after 8pm is okay, but no major meals. She also said many people with IBS go into "fear mode" about "cramping" and not be fearful..which will relax our intestines. She said fear and IBS, cramping and constipation go hand in hand..she said to not "think" about "what if I eat this? Because it makes our whole bodies, mind and digestion tense, which causes cramping. She said picture myself eating like I did when I was in my teens, twenties, and thirties. And to visualize it..back at the time when I never thought about cramping, stomach pain or discomfort/constipation. Easier said, then done..but basically just try to listen to "soothing music" while I ate, and to just relax my mind and visualize enjoying the food, like I used to. So..I am trying to do this..thought you might find it helpful..now if only I did not have that "fear" that's the hard part. 😳

in reply toEliana5

I’m on one meal a day basically and then a snack at dinner time (2pm as eating later causes issues) i weigh under 7 stone now and I’m just trying to get by tbh lol. Thank you for your tips 💓

Yes..it's so hard. I'm having a hard time with her advice, and feel she will be disappointed with me, when I see her next month. Took laxative yesterday..and it's hard to eat while you are running back and forth to bathroom. So ate nothing, except managed some sunflower seeds. Today, have only managed two poptarts. Not good, I know..just feel crummy from yersterday..

I’m exactly the same! Currently just going with it, but losing weight pretty fast due to barely eating anything. I’ve been suggested eating high fat content to keep up my calories but in terms of getting rid of symptoms the only way to do it for me is not really eat 😕 sorry not great advice aha😅 but you’re not alone. Please let me know how you do it’s nice to speak to someone whose In the same position

in reply toSophieC22

oh damn I’m sorry you’re going through this too! I’ve also lost a lot of weight as I’m extremely scared to eat so I feel your pain!! I used to be able to eat everything under the sun and now I can only eat in the morning and a bowl of cereal at that hah!

Weird how the body works isn’t it

I'm in the same boat. I'm a pathetic 119lbs at 5'5..down from being 186lbs a year ago. I look just awful. Even having hair loss. I want to go to an eating disorder place and get stabilized..but dietician said she does not think I have an eating disorder..but just have consistency every day and eat 3 meals a day, with protein, grains, carbs, and dairy..not to eat so many cookies (sugar craving from the Seroquel). I don't know what to do..can't gain weight..😳

Me too! I stick to my granola every morning as that’s all I can eat but sometimes I dont even feel hungry for that/don’t want to eat! Do you see any sort of specialist/dietician?

I’m sorry you’re going through this also - I wouldn’t wish this on anyone! I’ve actually just moved so I’m waiting for an appointment to see a new gastro (it’s been two/three months but hey I guess they’re busy 🤔) I have seen a dietician way back when I first got sick who suggested the FODMAP which didn’t help but other than that I’ve kinda been suffering lol

If you cannot eat fruit and vegetables, you can become deficient in nutrients. I would see a dietician or a gastroenterologist to discuss this. The vitamins and minerals contained in fruit and veg are very important.

Can you try nutrition weight gain shakes like "Ensure" or "Boost". I am trying to get these prescribed for me, as I too don't eat well..but Medicare won't pay unfortunately..only if someone is on feeding tube. You can may be get insurance to cover this for you with Doctor or dietician prescription. None have any "high glucose corn syrup" "sugar" or unhealthy additives, and nothing constipating like milk..

Hi Lilrose I spoke with you yesterday. I would also stay away from the rice noodles .... it’s just another form of fiber again. I also lost 3 stone and couldn’t eat anything like you. If you can eat/drink milk products I would definitely eat/drink them. 95% of Northern Europeans / white Caucasians are not lactose intolerant ... that means you can have milk products. You have to eat something !! Initially I tried all these other milks .... they made me even more ill : they are also very artificial. Natural yogurt was also good for me (but not the ones with all the ingredients in it). Don’t take the low fat yogurts as they have other ingredients in them. If the natural yogurt isn’t nice enough tasting put a tiny tiny bit of jam in it . Of course fruit and veg are important but whilst they make you feel ill then go easy on them. It takes months to get totally depleted of Vitamins. You can eat them when you get better. When I was so very very ill I was also worried and bought multi vitamins in the pharmacy : not a good idea I got so sick from that.... I’m much better now (after having been ill for 10 months) and I can now slowly eat small amounts of fruit and veg again (only some berries ... not the other fruits... only very small amounts and nothing with skins on them). but whilst I was so ill like you I couldn’t eat any fruit or veg. You need also at least a bit of protein. You could try home made chicken bouillon. Don’t buy the ready made ones as the artificial ingredients make you ill 🤧. Definitely no onion , no garlic, no leeks as they’ll make you bloat.

in reply toLCat

Thank you so much for all of the advice. I love to drink milk tbh and it’s the only thing that doesn’t hurt me. I have tried other forms of milk but tbh I didn’t like them at all (I’m a fussy girl lol.) I appreciate all of the advice so much and I’m glad you’re in a better place now 💓

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to

Lilrose regarding the milk : you’re not fussy ... just sensible. I also tried all those ‘fake milks’. ... They’re really also a sort of ‘processed food’ (artificial). I hated them and they made me feel more sick. You’re body tells you when you can eat / drink something ...if you drink normal cow milk ... at least your body gets some protein and a tiny amount of also needed fat ... plus you get some Calcium as well. You desperately need to eat/drink something ....so you should be happy 😊 that you can drink the milk. (When I was pregnant I also felt very sick at the time. Most of the time I was only able to drink milk. I did this for many months and felt very good at the time). I’ve also read that a lot of those ‘fake milks’ are also quite controversial. For hundreds and hundreds of years our ancestors drank milk and didn’t get ill from it. You’re not smoking or taking drugs : you’re ‘only’ drinking milk .... so what ? A few weeks down the line (like me) you will be able to add other food (not pizza of course) .... I mean some other harmless food... what else do you drink ?? Tap water ??

in reply toLCat

Thank you 💓

Yeah I drink Evian the tap water is gross in cornwall ahah. That’s all I drink is milk and Evian water x

may i ask for the recipe of a chicken bouillon that is ibs friendly ? as you said " no onions , no garlic and no leeks"

so what can we add to make it a bit tasty ??

LCat profile image
LCat in reply toEternity78

Hmmm a very good question is that. That’s what I asked myself before I started cooking the first chicken bouillon (without the onions/garlic/leek). I used chicken thighs without the skin (as they’re very tender). It’s important to add salt of course ... I didn’t dare to add pepper... too coward for that ....(without salt it would taste disgusting), I added a few relatively ‘harmless’ vegetables like a few carrots, parsnips initially (a few weeks later I also added some butternut squash and courgettes (zucchini)). I slowly simmered the chicken with the vegetables for one and a half hour to make sure the chicken is super super soft. In the last 5 minutes I put one or two basil leaves in for flavour. First time I expected the boullion to taste disgusting ( because of lack of leek/onion/ garlic) .... but I was amazed : it didn’t taste horrible at all. The combination of the chicken flavour together with the bit of salt and the veg flavour made it quite acceptable. I never got sick after the chicken soup.

You can do a breath test to test for SIBO ( I did that years ago ). I did have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). The only problem then was : what now ??? It’s a bit like being told you have IBS. There’s also no perfect solution to get rid of SIBO. The choices are either Antibiotics again (and then you would take them for very very long) or the FODMAP diet (plus add probiotics). My GI Consultant decided at the time for me not to take the ABs as I was ill enough and he thought they would make me even more ill. He asked me to go on the Fodmap diet which I did. After 7 months I recovered at the time .

in reply toLCat

I’ve had a test to see if I had bacteria in the bowels and it was clear but that was a loooooong time ago (many years ago) I am glad you’re feeling better though x

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to

Ah that’s different. The SIBO breath test only looks at possibly finding bacteria in your small intestines where bacteria are not supposed to be. (it didn’t help me to do the test because there’s no sensible treatment for this). I guess what you had years ago was probably (I guess) a stool test to see whether you had any bad bacteria in your large intestines. That’s definitely worth doing because that can (and must) be treated! As you probably know there are 100 trillions of (hopefully) beneficial microbacteria our large intestines. They are our friends and protect us. But sometimes we can get infected by nasty bad bacteria like Helicobacter Pylori or Campylobacter and others. I hope your doctors have done already a stool test to exclude these (???). That’s very easy and cheap to do. If ever this test is positive then you can be successfully treated. It’s not likely that you have this but it’s definitely important to exclude this.

in reply toLCat

Hey,

Yeah I did those tests a long time ago like seven years aha.

Thank you x

Hi lilrose - I’m so sorry you’re suffering. I totally understand your frustration and it’s so difficult to know how to move forward. IBS is literally a pain in the ass. And it’s so individual - what works for one person, doesn’t work for the next and everyone seems to have a different set or pattern of symptoms.

I think you should stick to what your body can tolerate for now, honey. If milk doesn’t upset your tummy, then have it. What are your main symptoms? I’m a constipation/pain/nausea gal just now, but I’ve had IBS-D also in the past. Xx

in reply toweegmack

Hey,

Thank you 💗

I’m sorry you’re going through this and yes it does seem to be a “what works for you doesn’t work for me” lol

My main symptoms are pain, nausea, constipation, blood.

weegmack profile image
weegmack in reply to

Oh it’s just awful 😞. And don’t you find that people just don’t understand? They think we just have a bit of a sore tummy and they have no idea how it pervades into every aspect of life.

Have you seen a gastro or had any tests? I have to take a laxative drink everyday, called Laxido (same as Movicol). Otherwise I get very backed up and have overflow diarrhoea 😳😳. However I still feel crappy most of the time. Xx

in reply toweegmack

It is awful and like you said people don’t understand at all. Bless my mother and sister they really do try to understand but they can’t - no one can unless they’re going through this which makes it harder for us!! Sometimes people even look at us like we’re overreacting. I can hand on heart say this illness has ruined my life and I wish it was taken more seriously.

I used to see a gastro back in Hertfordshire but he dropped me because I said he wasn’t supportive (I desperately needed help one time and he ignored all of my letters and emails and phone calls) so since moving I haven’t seen someone in I’d say a year? I’m waiting for a new appointment and yes I’ve had a lot of tests - way too many to count lol.

Sending you positive vibes, we’ll get through this✨

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to

Yes you’re right : you’ll get through this.... it’s just a matter of time... The problem with GI Consultants is this : So called IBS is something that nobody yet understands. They don’t know what it is nor what causes it nor how to cure it . Any good GI Consultants will admit this . There hasn’t been much research in this GI subject. We’re in the Middle Ages here. Also GI Consultants are very busy doing surgery etc. If they think you have nothing ‘sinister’ (like cancer) they’re basically not interested (never mind the horrible pain and the horrid symptoms you’re going through). Most of them are highly specialised in other GI subjects etc. There are only very very few highly specialised IBS type Consultants.

in reply toLCat

It’s such a shame. I understand they have to put others first such as cancer but we’re here suffering a lot with no one to help us.

It really does make you feel completely helpless and alone and I hate feeling like this lol.

Thank you for the advice I really appreciate it 💗

i'm in this state now ..the only thing that works for me is toast and bread " white never brown " white rice , boiled plain potatoes , jelly " some times but not directly on an empty stomach as it is a bit acidic yet it gives energy "

since you are ok with milk ..may be you can try lactose free low fat cheese with toast ?? maybe your stomach is too Acidic that it is relieved with milk which is Alkaline ..so also may be try an Alkaline based food ?

with IBS , it's like a puzzle we have to figure out what works for us and what hurt us and why ??

if bread , pasta hurts ..may be it means gluten intolerance

if fruits don't agree with me that is because they are high in the complex sugar " fructose" so i have to stay away from high fructose foods even the ones that have " high fructose syrup" ..and so on

very exhausting mission i know 😩😳 but since regular doctors and gastros don't give an interest to this area ..we either have to figure it out ourselves or with the aid of a nutritionist ..Hope you feel better soon ..Good Luck 💕

Take a good probiotic: I would recommend Alflorex. (precisionbiotics.com/uk) and take Silicol: (silicol.co.uk). Use the probiotic once a day and the Silicol 2 to 3 times a day, before meals. Keep up this regime for a least 3 months and see if there is any improvement. You can continue with the probiotic and Silicol without any long term problems. This is my regime and works wonders.

Hi lilirose.

I got to agree with maureen 1958. U may think ur ok with milk but ur drinking a lot of it more then a human should drink of milk, what can happen is u think ur ok with it as prob will b with ur first lot of the day and then ur have another and another but ur body will build up a intolerance through the day and then ur have problems....

I have exactly same problem with gluten and bread. I could have one tiny bit but if i eat any more through that day il then literally get ill.

I went to see a allergist about this and he explained there is a difference between being “ allergic and intolerant” !

A allergic reaction will b straight away and severe and ur usually born with it( ie i have a shellfish allergy which i have a epi pen for and it is severe as in 5 mins i have no airways) but u can have a intolerance which builds up, ie through ur life nothing but then ur start getting ibs symptoms or stomach aches out of no where and not really know why? U can also have a intolerance that builds through the day as in ur body will cope with a tiny amount of something but then as u keep eating or drinking through day it will build up and make u quite ill.

I got this through bread and gluten i noticed i could eat one bit then i get sicker through day as soon as i gave it up all my problems went ?

So just b careful that the thing u are only eating/ drinking could b the thing that is making u ill.

I was told milk is one of the highest intolerances next to gluten.

U say that u cant eat fruit and veg that could b because u have drank to much milk then ur trying veg and it not the veg it the milk.

I can eat certain veg... only ones cant is brocoli cabbage and cauliflower ... try things like sweet pot and spinach or carrotts ... roast them and there really nice.

As the way ur goin your gona make urself so ill as ur getting no vitamins or goodness and the one thing ur putting in ur body is the worst thing u can , cows milk! Plus sugar.... there alot of bug and bacteria that get in cow milk which sit in your gut and make u ill so i would suggest to even go almond or soya if u have to and definately

try some probiotics three times a days half hour before food so ur getting good gut bacteria in there.

I have a best friend whose a nutrionalist so any questions please ask

in reply toLulububs

Hi,

I appreciate the advice but no i actually am intolerant to fruit and veg. This started way before I started living on cereal, thanks though

Lulububs profile image
Lulububs in reply to

Well i would still take the probiotics it will help ur gut bacteria to get stronger to eventually b able to withstand other foods. Also some multivitamins with nutrients.

Otherwise ur end up with osteo and arthristis as ur not getting any vitamins or nutrients to feed ur bones, liver and organs which will just lead to so many worse problems then ibs....

As living on cereal and milk is prob worse then living on junk food.

Sorry i hope u dont mind i went to look through some of ur other posts(not stalking u lol) i just read ur symptoms have u been tested for cealiac desease??? Only u sound like my friend with all her symptoms and she found out she was cealiac.

in reply toLulububs

I did get tested for cealiac when I first got sick so eight years ago. A doctor down here where I now live suggested I may have it but idk things can’t really change can they? Like if it didn’t come up eight years ago would it come up now?

Lulububs profile image
Lulububs in reply to

Well apparently i was told u have to eat alot of gluten before u have the test which i had already realised it effected me so id given it up and the gp wanted me to gorge on it for 6 weeks before i had a test and i wouldnt do it....

As i know how ill i would have been.

So it could have been that u had not eaten enough gluten for it to show cealiac?

Or u may not b cealiac u may b highly intolerant.

I cannot have it at all, it makes me really sick i can tell if i got somewhere and it in my food within about 20 mins i will sweat and get pains in stomach and feel really sick and weird.

Oh wow I never knew that at all. Would be helpful if doctors actually told us this before i got tested 😂 ah I’m sorry the GP tried to that, it’s a shame there’s not another way to find out if you have or not.

I’m sorry you go through all of that, I can definitely relate and it sucks so much that we have to suffer through this. I’m hoping my new gastro appointment will come soon and I can get retested x

Yeh it would b good as u sound like u have some kind of problem there but like me ( not eating gluten at all) if u were tested it would prob come back negative coz u dont eat enough gluten if ur only eating cereal and milk?

I tell u what i would do if i was u just for one week!

Buy gluten free cereal and another milk , almond, soya. See how it improves? If in that week it does theres ur answer! Thats what i did.

I was eating nothing but cereal and toast when i was at worst and i just decided to see and i got gluten free cereal and no bread and within week in knew!

Then i started building uo gut health probiotics , digestives enzymes, peppermint oil!

Then within 2 week i was eating bit more ie gluten free crispbreads! Then i had a meal gluten free sausage and mash!

And i kept it all in!!!

It just slowly got better.

The better my gut felt the more i fancied food.

I still eat very clean white meats and green beans spinach , that kind of thing but i eat! So it good.

Now 18 month later im good!

in reply toLulububs

Wow ok thank you! I’m definitely gonna try it. Thank you so much for the advice I really appreciate it and I’ll definitely take it on board!! 💓💓

Yeh i mean u gota eat something like i was at my worse i was so scrawny and i just couldnt eat and my husband kept saying well what can u eat i was like cereal!!!

So he got me gluten free cereal and soya milk ( as someone suggested cows milk not good for already bad gut) so he brought me choco pillow lol from morrisons and soya milk and within week i just thought this is best ive felt in about year so i kept buying bit if gluten free and dairy free stuff and in end i just stopped all foods that had gluten yeast

Or dairy and i started eating more... buts if salad and then a apple then a small chicken fillet and spinach and just built up my food intake.

It good now, i dont even think about it now it just normal for me and i can eat a roast dinner now. Chicken or turkey. Some sweet Pot. Green bean.some spinach.

It take me about 6 months to build it up but im there!

So just try gluten free cereal and soya for say 7-14 days see if u feel better

Lilrose,

If you know your blood type & you are Type O (+ or - does not matter), then you MUST stop eating about 90% of the carbs your eating, or you will never feel better!

I don’t know my blood type. If I stopped eating cereal then I’d have nothing left to eat?

It’s awful isn’t it 😭 wish we could eat whatever we wanted

Hi. I live on broth, egg yokes, whipped cream, gelatine and chocolate. It's alright! These ingredients get me some tasty recipes: custard, ganache, bavarois, cake. Also: body builders' protein powders, they too are whole spectrum amino-acids, just like the egg yokes, gelatine and broth. Only my powder taste like cheese-tea, blergh. Just swallow and focus on the piece of chocolate for dessert. I LOVE not being bloated anymore. What I'm saying: don't try to eat a "normal" diet if your body doesn't want it.

Thank you 💓

in reply toEliana5

I’m 5ft2 my lowest weight was nearly six stone

I haven’t weighed my self in a long time as my mother won’t allow me to as she suspects I have a slight ED from having to control my eating

I am trying these as well..for weight gain..can you recommend one you are taking? I am currently on Ensure..have gained no weight I don't think..and milk (powder?) is the first ingredient, which only constipates me..😳

I'm taking Pepto Pro, the unflavoured kind. I let it dissolve in water until it's clear liquid. It tastes like old-cheese-tea.... close my eyes and chuck it backwards.

My body reacts positive to it. I feel it sustains me. But it is hydrolized milk powder.. :/

btw I'm 5'4 (1.62 meters) and weigh 55 kilos, that's 122 pounds. I lost 5 kilo's since eating like this, I've been 132 pounds all my life.

I don't want to get any thinner and I really have to eat to prevent that from happening.

I feel the same way. I will check into the nutritional drink..can I order it online? Do you have a website link for it..? Your weight is actually not too bad..

PeptoPro is a patented formula and various shops sell it in their own package. I ordered mine from the UK, from bulkpowders. Link = bulkpowders.co.uk/peptopro....

My digestive system has been functioning better since I've been drinking Pau d'Arco tea. An associate at my local health food store recommended it. If you want to try it, make sure it's safe if you're taking any prescriptions. Some herbs and medications can be dangerous if taken together. Your doctor or pharmacist would know.

With my meals I take supplements to help my stomach and intestines. HCL pills acidify my stomach acid, they work great against nausea. Digestive enzymes and bile (all in pills) help break down the food and aid uptake of the nutrients.

Instead of HCL you can take diluted lemon juice or vinegar. Flush with water afterwards to protect your teeth.

You can check whether the nutrients reach your body with a hair analysis. The hair stores the minerals and an analysis can tell you if you have shortage. Or excess of heavy metals.

Blood panels will also show shortages. I have regular tests done for Calcium, Magnesium, Natrium, Kalium and Zink.

You also need to be good in levels for vit D and vit B12. But! If your panels in these are good but you do have all the symptoms of shortage trust the symptoms and supplement. Your cells may not be able to process vit D and B12, due to DNA faults that code for faulty enzymes and vitamine receptors. This is the case with me, my blood levels are exemplary but I still need to supplement. I had my DNA checked (costs are 150 pounds).

Be careful with supplements, both mineral and vitamins. Minerals typically pry loose another mineral in the body. For example: supplement with Zinc and the Copper in your body will start floating around. Higher levels of Copper makes your brain wired and unhappy. This is temporarily but you need to know this can happen and why you feel so bad.

The same with Calcium and Magnesium. You eat Calcium? You need to take Magnesium. Otherwise the Calcium will rob it from your body and lead to osteoporosis.

Vitamine D is a pre-hormone. You can take too much. Blood levels should be in a range (80-120), don't be too high, don't be too low.
