Has anyone else had trouble with bottled water?

Yes I have. I stick to Buxton water as several other brands give me digestive problems. The minerals in spring water depend entirely on the types of rock it passes through and some just don't suit me. I have problems with minerals in multivitamin pills as well so don't ever take them nowadays (took me a while to work that one out).

There was a thread on here some time ago about brands of spring water causing stomach/bowel upsets.

I have to ask "Why bottled water"? Unless your own supply is deficient in some way, (filtered) tap water should be good. The minerals in bottled water have no proven value - and I'm a believer in the benefits in Holy Wells.

And yes, some of the minerals may work against what's already in your body. Although I have no evidence that any particular mineral is harmful, I'm sceptical about sulphur and iron in the forms they appear in water. Without going into excessive detail, most of our hard tap water is mineral! The rest is pretty well rainwater. It's an expensive way of getting H20 (up to 300x the cost of tap water). Remember the scandal of C*c* C*l* selling tap water? The named waters are responsibly marketed and true to their name I have no problem with that, but health claims (if any) should be taken with a large dose of salt. NOT LITERALLY.

Buxton goes through limestone/chalk. Others go through volcanic or metamorphic rock. It's a nice idea that water was filtered through a natural mineral for 3000 years but. . .uranium and arsenic are natural.

If you have any concerns, please consult your GP or health professional.

I've only known one genuine reason to avoid tap water. The sufferer had breast cancer and bottled mineral water of any description avoided the hormones present in tap water (the same ones causing fish to change sex - allegedly)

Home filtering does allow some of the chlorine to escape.

Bottled spring water and bottled filtered water gives me diarrhea. I have no problem with reverse osmosis tap at my home, or with distilled water.

Hi, Yes I do. the only time I have really had lots of bottled water is whilst on a cruise. Took me a while to realise that was the reason I always had diarrhoea and tummy cramps whilst away. I eat carefully on a cruise, and sadly avoid all the lovely food they supply and keep to my usual diet so I know its the water. I tried once when at home to drink bottle water for a few days and again I got diarrhoea etc. My Consultant said that he has heard this several times but has an explanation as to why.

Same for me, even at home, if I drink bottled spring, filtered or purified water, it gives me cramps and duarrhea. I choise either reveese osmosis or distilled, however some distilled bothers me.

interesting as I have never thought of this as a possible answer as to why I am always ill on holiday! Its the only time I drink bottled water, which is of course necessay in some places, ironically to avoid illness...

I had trouble with tap water some years ago when around this country except with the water in my own County (Kent - which I filter anyway). When travelling anywhere I always drink bottled water - I'm lucky in that the cheapest is OK with me.

I don't seem to have a problem with bottled water which I always drink after being diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2012. Obviously there are many causes for this, but it has been linked to chlorinated water so I stick to bottled water just in case and fortunately it does not seem to affect my IBS.

Hi,

I think you'll find that most, if not all, spring/mineral water is now bottled in PET (it carries the no.1 for recycling) and is quite safe.

It seems that some bottled water is high in magnesium and sulphate, neither of which are good for the gut. You live and learn!

I only drink Buxton, I swapped a while back and was I'll for about two weeks, the only change being bottled water. I discussed it with my doctor and of course got the usual there's no differences response (he hadn't even heard of the fodmap diet either). I changed back to Buxton and was back to normal in a few days, the reaction was too strong to be a coincidence.

Bottled spring water and bottled filtered and bottled purified water give me diarrhea. My reverse osmosis tap filtration is fine, as is distilled water. But I have always gotten diarrhea from other waters.
