I was in the same boat. Taking meds gives me more symptoms (amitriptyline made me more foggy brained and sleepy which was the opposite of how i wanted to feel!) so I chose not to.

You have to decide for yourself what type of treatment you want to go for...meds based or natural alternative treatments.

Maybe others on here have had positive effects with it so you can then weigh up for yourself.

Hey, I've been on 10mg for about 2 weeks and going to try upping to 20mg to see if they makes any more difference.

It has made me foggy in the morning but only if I take it just before bed. Got some great advice online to take it about 3hrs before you normally go to bed and see if that makes you less groggy in the morning.

On 10mg so far I've still felt anxious and had some of my symptoms but I feel a bit calmer then before. I think for me it's mainly been helping with the anxiety rather than anything else. My doctor said he's seen it work best with post-infectious IBS D patients but unfortunately it's not all guaranteed and very personal. I'm also having a SeHCAT test and barium xray to see if it could be bile salt malabsorption or crohns. I so often wish they did more research into things like IBS and had more definite ways of diagnosing you!

I tried amitriptyline but as the dose increase it knocked me out too much. I tolerated Sertraline better but if did not help my D or my sleep which is my other problem since it started. My advise is not to increase the dose too quickly - they stepped it up after a week which was too fast with hindsite for my body. I understand the groggyness in the morning does poss as body adapts. Good luck.

Hi Lynnie55,

I was on Amitriptyline for over a year, it was the best thing I'd taken. It really controlled my IBS-d, the only side effect I had was a dry mouth, but keeping a bottle of water to hand, made it ok.

It really improved the quality of my life while I was on it. Good luck in whatever you decide.
