I have another dumb question...Am I allowed to... - IBS Network
I have another dumb question...Am I allowed to have a beer now & than, with all my favorite veggies I must give up,I hope so:(
Well Thanks for the answer,I was figuring as much, but at this point,I will do whatever,I have IBS-D really bad so, no more beer for me Thanks again Teresa
I don't want to lead anyone astray but I have suffered chronic IBD for a number of years now and despite a recent bowel section my symptoms have got steadily worse, to the point that I am now completely house-bound. I do not drink alcohol at all, as a rule, but I have found that the occasional bottle of beer can help to settle my stomach. There is a trade-off in that it can increase the build up of wind and bloating but this causes me less pain than the usual 12-14 bouts of daily diarrhoea. If you fancy the odd glass of beer, now and then, it can't do you any long-term harm - see how you get on. I certainly wouldn't recommend more than the odd one or two but IBD is as much a mental struggle as it is a physical one and if it helps you to deal with your symptoms then why not. FYI bitters are less gassy than lagers and so cause less wind. I would say treat yourself to a good quality real ale and prepare yourself for the worst - as with all food AND drink you don't know until you try. Despite all of the usually good, and always well meaning advice on this site, your IBD is personal to you and only you can find a way to deal with it. Good luck.
i agree, gluten seems to be a trigger for me. but i still eat bread occasionally as i love it with my soup.. but i eat whole meal seeded, good bread and as soon as symptoms flare up i cut out the bread until my tummy settles down again. it's a balancing act. ceoliac disease is different - my mum has it, and now that she has cut out gluten, even the smallest bit can cause a massive flare up. but it's not always like that with ibs. certainly for me, it's more about intolerance than an allergy. i can tolerate a little of gluten when i am eating well otherwise, but after a few days of having a sandwhich a day, i start to feel the effects - so i cut it out till it's passed through my body and then i can have a bit again.
i find the best treatment, is eating good, basic food. homemade veg soup is my saviour! it has nothing but veg and allergen free stock, it's made fresh, lovely and warm and full of vitamins and minerals. it really helps not just with ibs but everything!
sorry im rambling a bit, to sum up. the odd beer may or may not cause u trouble, u have to find out. but not until you have found a diet that promotes good health in you first. and then u can see how these potentially bad things, like beer effect you with out any confusion about the difference it makes.
