I’ve been bulimic for about 6 months now and my mum confessed to me that she knew the whole time last week and she’s not leaving me to kill myself. I hate bulimia anyways i dont wanna purge anymore so i told her i wanted to recover but I don’t wanna gain any weight while recovering so i decided to count everything i eat and she said she’s okay with it as long as im not purging the food. I have been eating less than 500 calories for about a week now “purge free” and i still gained a kilo and half in the last two days I’m not eating anything high in carbs even only fruits and vegetables and a very small amounts of protein so why is this happening i want answers please help me I’m afraid I’ll go to purging again if i gained anymore! I exercise everyday i do so many exercises and i play sports for like 3 hours help please
Thanks

Hi, it is great that your Mum is supporting you. But maybe you could ask the GP for some specialist help and perhaps a Dietitian appointment sot that they can help you with a meal plan. 500kcal is not enough food, it is too restrictive.
Don’t worry, it is all fake weight, because you aren’t purging you weigh what you did before, plus the weight of food you have eaten.
You aren’t eating enough calories to be exercising as much as you say you are. You need to eat more. It is CRUCIAL that you are replenishing your electrolytes. Drinking Gatorade can help you get some more minerals. There’s a more natural alternative to Gatorade with higher mineral content, it is called ultima. It’s a powder you put into water.
Listen to me please. You are not putting on weight, it is water retention. This is very common when you are trying to stop purging. It isn’t permanent. It sounds like you’re struggling to get your life back and that is a traumatic thing to try to tackle on your own.
One of the things that helped me most was seeing a nutritionist. They made me a very basic meal plan that was easy to follow. Don’t go outside your comfort zone right now if you feel like this is a fragile time for you. Stick to “safe foods” that don’t make you want to purge. Try to incorporate some whole grains slowly. Understand that you may have thrown off your stomach’s ph and these may feel a little heavy in your stomach but that WILL pass, and pretty quickly. If you feel like you need some help digesting at first, go to the drugstore and buy papaya enzymes. These will assist your stomach acid in breaking down the food. Only take those as directed! Taking more than directed has no benefit at all, it’s not a weight loss pill it’s a natural digestive aid to get you through any fullness or discomfort.
More than that.... find something you like to do and do it. A hobby or a craft. You have a lot of value and potential you just need to take the time to get to know yourself better you got this!
Its good you've shared with your mother and that she is supportive. However, you do need to get to your GP and get some help. 500 cals is not a sufficient diet - nor is it a balanced on - and the amount of exercise you are doing is excessive given the cals. I had a sickness bug overnight and dropped 1.5kg - all back on within 3 days - when you are purging you are getting rid of not just nutrients/food - but a lot of water - and this easily accounts for your weight gain. Recovery needs more than a stop of purging - you need some counselling and help to get a better mind set around food - and you certainly need checking out by a GP as purging can seriously affect all sorts of things and damage your health.
