"First described as “acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis” by Dr. Robert Douglas Sweet in 1964, SS (Sweet's syndrome) is a prototypical neutrophilic dermatosis. In his original report, Dr. Sweet described acute onset of fever, leukocytosis, and painful edematous plaques in eight middle-aged women; histopathology of the lesions showed a dermal neutrophilic infiltrate. The eponym “Sweet syndrome” was termed by Whittle and colleagues in 1968. SS can occur at any age, but the average age of onset is between 30 and 60 years, with a female predominance. Given the association with a broad range of comorbid conditions, many authors group SS into three main subtypes: classic (idiopathic), malignancy-associated, and drug-induced."

Neutrophilic dermatoses are on a spectrum. This means that different forms can overlap; one may develop secondary to another, e.g. Sweet's syndrome or Sweet's-like condition develop secondary to Behcet's; on very rare occasions, one may change or evolve into another, e.g. neutrophilic infiltrate found in a patient with SS has the potential to extend around the sweat glands, leading to neutrophilic eccrine hidradentitis (NEH).
