Lonely and out of shape

I'm recently retired and divorced and having problems with my knees. I have problems connecting with people and I often find myself alone and not moving around and getting out much. How can I alleviate this problem?

mamapitt,

Upheaval in our personal lives can have a profound affect on our health. Give yourself permission to start out slow. Sometimes the first step is going walking in a park. You can get the energy of being around people without feeling that you must have a partner. Group classes especially water aerobics can provide a knee friendly way to move and connect with others.

Hang in there!

Getting a new social life is always difficult after a big life change. You might look at programs that local hospitals have. My local hospital has a monthly support group for patients with arthritis. You might find a walking group. Having others as part of our support network is important. Getting onto this site was one step forward. Congratulations!

Hi Mampitt

how is the neighborhood that you live in? Are you safe to walk around the neighborhood? Do you have any neighbors that would join you for a walk? You can try marching in place while watching TV and start slow.

I agree with all the advice provided. If you watch a lot of television, try getting up and walking in place during the commercials. Start slowly. Also, have you been seen by a provider. You may be able to get physical therapy which can strengthen the muscles around the knee joint and help to alleviate that pain. Physical therapy has a small social component to it. Finally you may want to take time to assess what you enjoy doing and then join a group and you can meet other individuals who enjoy what you enjoy. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress. Remember small steps, the first one is the most difficult but you can do it.

Baby steps is the key 🔐 every day is a new day you have to find something that you like to do. For me it was the Pool 🏊🏾 and that’s also where I found and made friends. Let me know how your baby steps go hang in there God’s got your back😇

Sorry about your difficulties. You are not alone. Agree with all replies. A 1000 Mile walk starts with the first step or a mile walk starts with the first step. Be welll
