Dear Borowski, Probably the best advice I can give you is to do your exercises as gaining motion after the surgery is critical---and in order to do good therapy your pain has to be controlled. So know that you will need to take your pain meds for the first few weeks post so you can do effective therapy. Best to you! It is a great operation for a really arthritis knee!
Be sure to have your home stocked with prepared meals. Also try to move tripping / falling hazards (like rugs & cords) out of the way before hand. Make sure you have your walker & shower chair. Grabbers ( to help pick up things off the ground or out of reach are also helpful). Good luck!
Just a note to say welcome to the community and wish you the very best for your knee replacement procedure and onward journey. Any medical intervention is a big life event so staying calm and positive by doing breathing exercises can help with any anxiety, and also don't forget to reach out and let your friends and family know what you are going through so that you get support and encouragement that way. We will want to hear you report on your progress here in Knee Pain Support community and you can count on this group as a source of positivity! Very best wishes!
Again, welcome to the community. I would also like to encourage other patients that have had a knee replacement to respond.
One of the points that we make in our total joint class is: Do not place a pillow behind your knee. You want to have your whole leg elevated - so it is ok to put a pillow under your ankle. You can also ice your knee (ice pack - not directly on the skin). You want to keep the swelling down.
I’ve had both my knees replaced. Recovery is work but so worth it! Ice ice and keep it moving. Get up and walk frequently. Sit outside. Best of luck to you.
get off of opioids as soon as you can--no more than 12-14 days. I am 75 and had my 2nd total knee 6 months ago. I have personally done over 2000 total knees--i was off pain meds within 4 days--celebrex and tylenol were enough. ICE AND MOVEMENT ARE THE KEY.
