,I haven’t heard of it being caused by chemicals or smoke. I don’t believe there is a known cause ,it is an autoimmune disease not something you can catch. Maybe, a bit more research is needed for you to get the answers you are seeking.
Scleroderma is classed as a rare disease , if you look it up on the internet I believe there is approximately 19,000 cases in he UK.
yes, Buttsy is right. It’s a scary thought- no known cause!?! no known cure!?
Researching is helpful but being diagnosed with any form of scleroderma is mind boggling. In my research (diagnosed 10 yrs ago) I have found may chemicals as well as their fumes can trigger the immune system to go into defense mode ex. Bleach, windex, even soaps. Basically as far as chemicals causing the diagnosis I would, too, say no. However, plastic (which is a non naturally occurring element) fumes can definitely cause types of cancer and there are several links to such.
I had a hunch once that getting a tattoo sparked the turn in my body because it was in and around the time that I noticed my first symptom. At the same time I was enrolled in Cosmetology school so there are time I wonder about the exposure to hair color etc. could have caused it. I have always thought we are predisposed to develop auto immune from birth.
In conclusion, I think you have a good question and encourage you to keep thinking and asking questions never stop asking questions!
So you’re not wrong; about the plastic fumes and chemical exposure causing scleroderma. Nobody’s knows or is admitting that you’re right. What could the doctors tell us to do IF this was true? write a prescription to live in a bubble!!!? Just makin a joke.
I will say it is up to the few of us to be aware of our environment changes, substance exposure- inhaled or touched, dietary intake, stress exposure AND tell someone or journal to track whenever if ever ‘someone’ decides they care.
I may be having Scleroderma but their is no genetic cause because my parents don't have it. But I used to burn plastic in my school days for creative projects, which must have damaged my lungs at the earrly stage.
I was always warned by my parents not to burn plastic due to the fumes. Out of all the things we were or weren’t taught then, I thought it to be awkward advice. My parents don’t have scleroderma but each has serious heath concerns. Predisposition I think is the word. And you don’t feel like you were predisposed? The lungs are known to be the last stage.
Sounds like you’re on the same page I am about the predisposition and progression of our diagnoses. The way our body reacts in defense by shutting off and permanently hardening foreign cells or smells. This has always been. Up until a near death experience from manifesting symptoms a do we find out.
