RSV Vaccine

The vaccine is only being given to 75 -79 yr old. I am 82 with scleroderma and other underlying health issues. The article I read said that the NHS is offering the explanation that if over 80 you could have side effects after receiving the vaccine and the other explanation in the article is that if you are over 80 your life expectancy generally is decreased so therefore there is a price consideration if you are 75 -79 it is more cost effective for NHS. I am considering going privately to have the jab but I can’t find any information regarding possible side effects. Any information will be very much appreciated.

Two possibilities.

Go private, costs apparently between £ 150.00 and £ 200.00

Or quote back to the consultant or GP, this

It says: "Vaccination of individuals not included in the eligible cohorts

When providing advice to government, the JCVI reviews the current evidence with regard to benefit and cost-effectiveness. On the rare occasion when a clinician, following an assessment, determines that an individual who is not eligible for the national RSV vaccination programme should receive an NHS RSV vaccination, the vaccine should be procured from the manufacturer. GP surgeries can reclaim the cost of the vaccine from the NHS. Vaccines supplied to practices free of charge via ImmForm cannot be used for this purpose."

See :_ gov.uk/government/publicati...

See this page from the NHS for more details on the side effects of this vaccination as well as the drug manufacturer's leaflet that is supplied with the vaccines, which includes yet more information.

From the NHS page.

Side effects of the RSV vaccine

The most common side effects of the RSV vaccine are mild and do not last long.

They can include:

swelling or pain where the injection was given

a headache

an aching body

More serious side effects such as a severe allergic reaction are very rare.

Talk to your doctor or the person vaccinating you if you're worried about side effects.

I had the vaccine last Monday and can only say I had no side effects at all. I am 77. I do think though that to limit to this particular age group seems so unfair.

What great information and I will certainly use the GP approach so thank you for taking time out to furnish me with this . I know you have to have cut off dates but a 5 year window seems a bit on the tight side to me.

Hi creditcrunchie, my husband has just had the jab, he’s eighty in January so just scraped in. He hasn’t had any side effects and no painful swelling, he is healthy though. He did suffer quite serious side effects particularly with the first Covid vaccine and sometimes the flu vaccine but hardly noticed the RSV vacc. I’m just turning 72 and having had both bronchitis and pneumonia previously, like you I’m also concerned that I don’t qualify , but then I think that anyone with a serious illness should also qualify regardless of age. I hadn’t thought of going privately but I will now make enquiries, so thank you for posting this, keep well.
