I'm a 70 yr. old man that had a combined prostatectomy and diverticulotomy 5 months ago. The diverticula was very large prostate gleason score 7. However, I feel that I'm still retaining more than I should. I was experiencing some incontinence before my surgery, and continue to do so. In fact, in seems to be getting a little worse. I have had about all the tests imaginable prior to my surgery, and also tried the meds with little success. I began to wear diapers before my surgery just in case...sometimes overkill, other times glad I did. I continue to wear protection and am wondering if this will be a permanent part of my wardrobe. It doesn't bother me much any more. I do know that my urologist will suggest a bladder sling or AUS in the future, but really don't want any more surgeries, appliances, catheters anymore. So, I guess I'm just wondering if managing as I am is appropriate in my case. Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried working with a physical therapist? Has there been any mention of trying to strengthen your pelvic floor? Just wondering if that has been considered with your surgeon or tried in the past.

Also, it is not uncommon to have some leakage after a prostatectomy for up to a year. I am glad you are staying on top of this and be sure your urologist knows of any changes (more leakage, less leakage, etc.).

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have been doing some kegel exercises, but not sure if they are doing much. I'm just wondering since I had green light surgery 8 yrs. ago coupled with the large diverticula that was removed, if my recovery will be prolonged. My 6 month check up is in early October. I will know more then.

A physical therapist could ensure that the exercises are being done correctly, and the addition of biofeedback or e-stim might also be of help. It might be something to consider and discuss in October. I wish you all the best!

Kegel exercises are great, but it take quite some time to see a difference. Personally for me it took like a year to see a difference, also considering that you are 70 years old it may take even long time. After all it's a muscle and in older age muscles aren't nearly as efficient, strong and trainable as in our middle-aged days. You can try running some additional tests and set an appointment with a doctor, maybe it will shed some more light and continue doing kegels - I'm not an expert in this area and anatomy whatsoever, so I can't really say how big doing kegels at your age can have an impact, but do your best before setting yourself diapers only.
