Hi Jennifer. Great news that your dad is doing so well without side effects on Olaparib. As for the liver enzyme results you mentioned, they are still within normal values, albeit on the high side of normal. All drugs that are developed to deal with cancer carry a high level of toxicity especially to the liver. Cancer is a beast so naturally drugs to try and stop it in it's tracks have to be toxic as well. Remember that Olaparib is extensively metabolized by the liver so I'm sure that is what is reflecting the numbers you see. Also I don't know how old your dad is but another consideration is that drugs that have first pass metabolism in the liver is affected by aging in general meaning a longer time occurs before a drug reaches systemic circulation) and the pharmacology profiles show that it decreases by about 1%/year after age 40. So the liver works harder if the drug stays there longer before it is metabolized. From your profile you mention that you are an oncology nurse at MSK so I am sure depending on what area you work in all this information about metabolism would not be new to you...I apologize if that is the case as I didn't read your profile until after I wrote that info. My advice is always to look for a trend in the bloodwork as many other things that we do without thinking prior to blood draws can affect results. You dad's results are no where near a point that you should be concerned and I hope they stabilize soon and remember they may stabilize at these values and that will be totally fine too. Take care.
