Not all. Used to drinks tons of milk. Now almost never but still eat a little cheese and yogurt. I read that it’s inflammatory. Who knows?

Hi Ellie,

I don't eat much dairy, but I do like to eat some cheese or yoghurt sometimes. I have never been a huge fan of cow's milk. I have always had my tea black (even as a toddler!) I hate hot milk. It turns my stomach. I drink almond milk instead, but that's just personal preference. I also eat eggs sometimes, but I choose free range eggs from a local farm. There are studies that say dairy is inflammatory, while others say it's OK to still have it. I try to be balanced and have some sometimes, but it doesn't make up the bulk of my diet. I would talk to a dietitian if you are concerned about dairy.

When I went trough my first treatment chemo radiation etc the nurses advices me to give up dairy as it could feed the cancer. Does that mean it only feeds on oestrogen? I’d love to eat guilt free cake once in a while but thought it feeds on sugar. Sometimes I think, Ellie you’re taking chemotherapy pills just eat what you like but then I get paranoid!

in reply to Toomanyquestions

Ellie, I have some homemade cake and other confectionery recipes if you are interested. I make my own banana ice cream, brownies and other things. I didn't like the idea of depriving myself of everything after I started treatment, so I make what I fancy from scratch and it is much healthier. x

I’m with Barb... my doctor told me to get as much calcium from foods for bone strength. In addition, I take 1200 mg of calcium vitamins a day.

Do you get your calcium checked with your bloods? Too much is bad for you x

in reply to Toomanyquestions

I'm just looking over my recent pathology results and my calcium levels are checked regularly. They come under the bone profile section on the first page of the report. I have queried too much calcium (hypercalcaemia) and my oncologist said if that ever happened then I would simply stop taking the Adcal D3. x

My oncologist told me if I was hypercalcaemic then I would definitely know and be really ill

It’s checked for those of us who have xgeva shots..can’t have them if calcium levels drop..has happened once to me so I take 4 adcal chewable tablets every day and eat dairy..mainly milk and cheese

Hi Barb,

That's interesting to know. It makes sense that we would feel unwell if we were hypercalcaemic.

Calcium levels are also checked for those of us on Zometa infusions. Do you take the chewable Adcal D3? If so, you might want to check it doesn't contain soya. I switched from the chewable kind to the tablets when I realised it contained soya.

I know they contain soya but it’s a tiny amount so I won’t worry

Ah, OK. I wasn't sure if you knew or not.

I was in hospital for 2 weeks because I had too much calcium in my blood. Took a lot of fluids and a blood transfusion to get me back x

No. I like my dairy but I have to take lactaid in order to eat it! I find I'm eating less but I have to have my ice cream once in a while! That's my treat!!!!

Nope! Still have my latte every morning. At first milk products tasted bad but my taste buds are back to normal. I eat cheese and some ice cream, but don’t drink straight milk as I hate the taste and always have..would only drink my milk with chocolate as a kid!

I drink and eat dairy for the calcium but also drink unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I think the same way, I am on chemo pills so what the heck. There is some form of estrogen everywhere, you cant escape it. No matter how old we are or in menopause our bodies still produce small amounts. I just try not to stress to much and enjoy my life now.

I love dairy!

I eat lots of cheese and use 2% organic milk with organic cereal and fresh fruit.

I make 1 smoothies a day with 1 cup of 5% plain fat greek yogurt, 1 cup of 2% organic milk, banana, 2 g turmeric powder, sometimes I had 1 g of beet powder, 1/2 tbsp date nectar (low in sugar 6 g and 12 cal) and a dash of coconut extract and 3 ice cubes. Yum Yum !!!!

My CBC calcium ranges consistently around 9.1 - 9.6.

I don't eat ice cream anymore, I just don't have a taste for it. I do it frozen fruit occasionally.

I could never give up my yogurt and cheese, like Wallace and Grummet lol.

Yes. I gave up dairy. It isn't only the hormones in dairy products, but a protein called casein which is not good for us, and many sources where dairy comes from (unless organic) has been given antibiotics, something else which isn't good for us. I used to love dairy products. Loved them a lot! I have found substitutes. I believe what I am doing helps my situation and also gives me a sense of some control on this roller coaster ride! Faith

in reply to Have-faith

Their are no antibiotics in Canadian milk as it’s not allowed so I’m safe lol.

I'm not a huge dairy fan myself so I pretty much don't eat any dairy. I love almond milk and use that instead. I will have the occasional egg but i buy free range eggs. I haven't been able to drink coffee lately because it adds to my anxiety which i am trying to get under control but there is nothing better than half and half in coffee. So in that case I think I would make an exception and besides it's not very much.

I use almond milk and organic cheese and yoghurt on occasion, less hormones and no antibiotics. Here is a recipe from Joy Bauer's cookbook for nondairy ice cream:

4 overripe bananas cut into small pieces or mash before freezing, !/2 cup unsweetend cocoa powder, 1/4 cup almond milk, tiny pinch of salt and if desired 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

put into blender and blend until smooth, freeze until firm and enjoy. Satisfies my craving for ice cream.

She also makes sorbet like ice cream with only fruit blended till smooth and frozen. You can google her recipes.
