I assume you mean Ativan. This is commonly used to help people get through a scan where anxiety is a problem. As the expression goes, "You're awake and aware but just don't care". Have someone drive you home from a scan if you use Ativan. You'll be drowsy for a short while. Best wishes.

I use Ativan on an as-needed basis. I used it for awhile for brain MRIs because the machine made me feel confined. But then I got used to the scans without using Ativan, until they changed the machine. And I'm now back to using it. Sometimes I use it to fall asleep when I have to get up really early for an appointment or to catch a flight, and I'm wide awake. Ativan, like other similar drugs (Valium and Klonopin) help alleviate anxiety, but they are addictive, meaning that you would keep needing a larger dosage for the same anxiety relief if you took them regularly. However, QOL is important, too, and they may help a person through the day. After all, we do have MBC. Not a cakewalk. Speak with your doctor about it. Many hugs.

I've met alot of other women with mbc and it seems like a huge proportion of us use meds for anxiety, depression and/or sleep at times while living with this lousy rotten cancer. My gynecologist spent quite bit of time talking with me about how both cancer and cancer treatment can change our brain chemistry, which means those meds can really make a big difference to our quality of life. I also take Ativan or Xanax for MRI s. It's the machine noise that makes me want to punch something and get outta there ASAP. My onc suggested I take one an hour before the test and then put one under my tongue for fast absorption right before the scan. So I usually put one under my tongue right after I change out of my street clothes.
