Today marks the beginning of National CPR/AED Awareness week!

Today marks the beginning of National CPR/AED Awareness week, which takes place annually from 01 to 07 June. This week, we at Arrhythmia Alliance want to shine a light on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). If you, like us, believe that more people should know how to save someone’s life, stay tuned for this week’s posts!

What exactly is an AED? An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is an emergency life-saving device that can be used by anyone to help restart the heart when Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) strikes. Using an AED together with CPR is the only way to restart the heart’s natural rhythm following a SCA, and anyone can use one! The device is fully portable and gives the heart an electrical charge to establish a regular heartbeat. The Resuscitation Council AED Guidelines in fact advise that an AED can be used safely and effectively without previous training. The AED will only shock when necessary - you cannot cause further harm by using an AED, you can only potentially help save a life. Once activated, the AED guides the user through each step of the defibrillation process by using voice and visual prompts.
