Hi, Does anyone get severe painful calf spasms during the night. It's an excruciating pain that lasts for a few seconds to a minute or two. Plus swollen ankles. On the odd occasion over the years I have experienced this but it seems to be 3 or 4 times a week at the moment. The slang term is Charley Horse.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks

Yes, quite often get calves tightening during night which can lead to very painful spasms, sometimes wake up with it. I have 2 options to deal with it, one being a Tai Chi exercise called a Tor Yu which gently reduces the tightness (check it out on YouTube), easy to do just stood by side of bed. The other is my old friend Therapulse, 10 minutes on each leg while lying in bed.
Cramps could be a result of poor absorption of minerals including magnesium and potassium. And of course poor absorption of iron can lead to decreased iron in the brain - a leading cause of RLS. I got immediate relief of cramps with sea salt and cream of tartar (potassium source) mixed in water. Also consider commercial electrolyte products.
Me! I used to get cramps. Really bad, painful cramps. I once saw a dent in my shin, I didn't even know there were muscles there. Then after 60 years I found something that helped. For the last 6 months or so, I put
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon Potassium Citrate
1/2 scoop Magnesium Citrate
into every water bottle. My blood pressure has not gone up.
I am absolutely amazed at what salt can do. I can't believe we are told how bad salt is for us when it is one of the most important minerals.
I don't eat a lot of processed foods. I workout a lot and I love saunas. i.e. I sweat a lot.
Adding salt to my water bottles, I can rarely taste the salt. Yet I feel so much better.
I can't say enough about how much better I feel, especially after a long bike ride or sauna.
I quit pramipexole in January. At the same time I changed my diet, cut out sugar and carbohydrates. My RLS is mostly gone, but instead I get nocturnal cramps in my left foot. Only in my left foot. This is no better than RLS. Mixing Gabapentin and Kratom allows me to sleep. I hope the longer I am without DAs the better I get. I tried all the remedies and all the stretches. Nothing helped.
Hi Keiralee, I go through phases of cramps, especially since entering the late 50's to now, I'm 66. When I start to get them, in my feet, or calves, I start taking more magnesium and some electrolyte solutions- available from the supermarket here in Australia. Once I start those, I seem to lose the cramps. As well as this, when I had a particularly painful cramping of my thigh, my doctor gave me quinine which i can take occasionally if needed and that knocks it on the head. I never take more than one tablet and have had the bottle of pills for over a year and there are most of them left.
My other advice is to eat a banana every day. When I do, I seem to have fewer problems with cramping. Good luck finding the solution that works for you.
