Sorry to bother people I am suffering from bad brain fog (or maybe just stupidity ) but I need to go back on medication for high blood pressure and all I can recall is that calcium channel blockers are not suitable but cannot remember which tablets are OK. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Blood pressure medication
Some medicines that are safe for high blood pressure are propranolol (Inderal, Hemangeol, InnoPran) a beta blocker that may help RLS, Isosorbide Mononitrate (Monoket, Imdur) which is not a beta blocker nor calcium channel blocker. Other possibilities are: Clonidine (Catapres) an Alpha-2-Agonist used to treat high blood pressure which may help RLS and which also treats insomnia, tenex (Guanfacine, Intuniv), prazosin (Minipress) an alpha-adrenergic blocker that is also useful in managing sleep-related problems caused by PTSD and Tadalafil a vasodilator that in one study completely eliminated RLS. Discuss these with your doctor. And then there is reducing salt by 1 teaspoon a day nih.gov/news-events/nih-res....
I take a calcium chanel blocker without ill effects on my RLS.
Thanks for your reply it just proves that we are all different. I know I have been OK with some tablets that are supposedly triggers for RLS. Strangely it was when I was prescribed Felodipine and Simvastatin that I immediately started getting nightly RL S and of course after a week and no improvement I stopped one tablet for a week, next week stopped the other , then I stopped both. Eventually I tried a month with no medication to see if it would stop RL S but to no avail. It was as if either one or both of those tablets permanently switched on my RLS. I had a previous experience of lithium causing RL S but it happened gradually after about 6 weeks on medication and stopped, I think immediately, after I stopped taking the tablet. It is years since I have taken either a cholesterol lowering drug or blood pressure medication and my RL S just gets worse. Apologies for lengthy reply but often wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience of medication switching on RLS.
You're not bothering anyone—it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed when dealing with medication choices. It's good to know which medications work for you and which ones don't, so you're already on the right track by identifying calcium channel blockers as unsuitable.
For alternatives, many people with high blood pressure find success with ACE inhibitors like lisinopril or ARBs like losartan. Both of these options are typically well-tolerated and can help manage blood pressure effectively. However, it's crucial to consult with your doctor to determine the best medication for your specific situation.
In addition to medication, you might want to consider supplements that can naturally support blood pressure management. Amino acids like L-arginine have been shown to help improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. Some people find that adding an amino acid supplement alongside their medication provides extra support for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.
