Possible extra neurological issue?

About three times over the last year I’ve had a really weird episode. Always during the day, when I’m standing. All of a sudden I get a rush of sensation in my upper leg muscles that’s the same as my RLS symptoms, then it switches to pain which grows in intensity before disappearing. Each time it feels as though my legs are going to give way. Thankfully each time it’s only lasted for seconds, but it’s a bit scary to say the least. Has anyone else experienced this? I know I should go and see my doctor as this is a new development after a lifetime of RLS, but I’d just be interested to know if I’m alone in this. TIA.

Just to clarify - both legs or just one?

Hopefully someone will come along with similar symptoms....Is it relieved by sitting or not? Felt in both legs at the same time or not necessarily?

Both legs, at the same time while standing. During the daytime. Completely random. It comes and goes in a matter of seconds while I’m still standing. I’ve had RLS for nearly 62 years, but this is something new. However, as I said in my post, the initial sensation is the same as the sensation I get with RLS when it’s at its most intense until it switches to pain which grows in intensity before suddenly disappearing. That’s why I think there must be a connection.

I noted that you'd had lumbar decompression surgery for sciatica years ago, and a relative of mine developed spinal stenosis some time after back surgery. This lead to sensations from restlessness to pain in both legs when standing, was relieved by sitting down, but it was not as intermittent nor anything like as short-lived as your symptoms. (They talked to me about the possibility of RLS before getting the diagnosis).Best of luck with finding an answer!

Thanks for your reply. My surgery was for spinal stenosis, which is what was causing the sciatica. That was about 9 years ago and I know only too well the pain that sciatica gives you. This has only started in the last year, is completely different and is like something being suddenly fired up and then passing in seconds. The scary boy is feeling for a few seconds that your legs are going to give way under you and you’ll be paralysed. Must go to the doctor 😔

The only thing I can think of is perhaps some sort of parasthesia?

I get the meralgic type ,which is like sciatica in the thigh. LHS. Pain and burning. Dr Google says it's from wearing belts too tight or a seatbelt incident.???🤔

Thanks. No, that doesn’t sound like it at all. It’s nothing like sciatica pain which tends to run from the buttock down the back of the leg, and there’s no burning sensation. I still suffer with sciatica pain in my right leg so it’s easy to tell the difference.

This thing It begins suddenly with the same sensation I get with RLS, which is the ants crawling under your skin type sensation people describe, I’d describe it as your muscles itching and the muscles in the upper legs feel like jelly. Then after a few seconds it turns to pain, like a very tired overused muscle type pain, then it stops. All over in a matter of seconds, but during the pain stage it feels as though your legs might give way. All the sensations are from the muscles at the front of both thighs, I believe they’re called the quadriceps.
