Good news, I think. My GP (doctor) had to give a talk on a subject of his choice to all the other doctors in his Practice. He told me that he decided to give a talk on restless legs! He, of course, had learnt a lot from me & all my ups & downs & he also had to do a lot of extra research.
Well, I am sure you will all agree this is great news to think the word is being spread amongst the medical profession. Hurrah!
As you know I am having great success thus far with buprenorphine and I still take 900mg gabapentin (down from 2,100).
He wants me to also take an iron tablet at night.
Sue, did you say iron tablets don't work if taken in the evenings with gabapentin??

I am lucky to have, at least, a caring GPs who accepts I know more than they do about RLS. Your success makes me feel it’s worth my continuing to try to educate them, when I sometimes feel uncomfortable doing so. I haven’t managed to be prescribed Buprenorphine as in my Trust GPs cannot prescribe for RLS. I have had to be referred back to Neurology (who MAY be able to as it’s with a different Trust) my appointment is for July 2024!
I doubt my sanity at times with this hideous condition, but your news does give me hope!
You can take gabapentin and iron at the same time and at night. I probably told you this but take your iron with 100 mg of vitamin C or some orange juice since that helps its absorption. Take it every other day, preferably at night or if every day at the same time so it is at least 24 hours apart since when you take it hepcidin is released which prevents iron from being absorbed for up to 24 hours. Take it at least 1 hour before a meal or coffee or tea and at least 2 hours after a meal or coffee or tea since iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach and the tannins in coffee and tea limit absorption. If you take magnesium, calcium or zinc, even in a multivitamin take them at least 2 hours apart since they interfere with the absorption of iron. Also antacids interfere with its absorption so should be taken at least 4 hours before the iron or at least 2 hours after. Don't take your iron tablets before or after exercise since inflammation peaks after a workout, don't take tumeric as it can interfere with the absorption of iron or at least take it in the morning if you take your iron at night. If you take thyroid medicine don't take it within 4 hours. It takes several months for the iron tablets to slowly raise your ferritin. Ask for a new blood test after 3 months.
hello, simkin, I’m just wondering what dose buprenorohine you are on? I’m currently trying to combine a level of pregabalin and buprenorphine ( sublingual tabs) and am trialing different combinations - now on 100 mg preg and 0.6-1 mg of bup - plus also taking iron every other day but doing it in the morning cos fitting it in in the evening with other medication and eating was difficult ! Pleased to hear that you are doing well
See the third reply in this post. It lists some of the people who get immediate relief with iron, either alone or in combination. I am as adamant about people trying this simple measure, one time, as Jools is about doctors not prescribing DAs. healthunlocked.com/rlsuk/po...
