RLS in MS patients

A study from Saudi Arabia shows that RLS affects around 30% of the MS patients in the Study. This reflects other studies on MS.

I've asked whether the study participants were taking any medication for their RLS, as that would affect the results.

As usual, the cause of the RLS isn't clear. The study suggests it may be caused by low brain iron, inflammation or spinal cord scarring.

Those on higher efficacy MS drugs (Ocrevus & Fingomolid) seem to have worse RLS than those on the older, less effective MS drugs(Interferons, Aubagio) which is the opposite of what I would expect.

Gosh! Joolsg. This is very interesting to follow up

It surprised me. Unless those patients are on RLS meds? I've written to the lead writer to ask!

🤣Clearly my Google research alert isn't up to scratch.

A contributory cause of M.S, is the same as the cause of most RLS namely high carbohydrate consumption leading to insulin resistance. youtu.be/HUlk0pZhTek?si=Bca...

High genetic predisposition and infection with Epstein Barr Virus are the causes of MS. In my family, there are 4 women with MS. We took part in the Cambridge gene project. As you know, I have spent years ( 14 years on Roger MacDougall diet) and on very strict diets following paleo, keto, low fodmaps, low oxalate, vegan, wahls etc. They didn't make the slightest difference to my MS or my RLS.

Viruses trigger auto immune disease.

That's why MS and type 1 diabetes are suddenly on the increase. Covid virus triggers auto immune disease.

CD20 drugs work well for MS. They kill off B cells containing the Epstein Barr Virus. My MS stabilised when I gave up the restrictive Wahls diet and started Disease Modifying therapies like Natalizumab and Ocrevus.

Newly diagnosed MS patients who undergo HSTC therapy to kill off EBV and those starting B Cell depleting therapy will see their MS stop progressing. There are fewer people with severe disability because of the effectiveness of these newer drugs.

Diet obviously helps everyone. A healthy, balanced diet is good for us. But to say it's the cure for auto immune disease and RLS is not correct.

By all means tell people it's helped you and they should consider a trial, but please stop telling us that your diet is the cure for all disease.

Yet again, we'll have to agree to disagree.

The reason that MS and type 1 diabetes are suddenly on the increase could equally due to the proliferation of refined carbohydrates in modern Western diets.

Eryl, STOP!

Eryl, as can be read below the video, dr (?, does he have a PhD?) Berg is a chiropractor and selling a book about the keto diet. That doesn't sound like credible knowledge about -the causes of- MS.

Personally, I find it very belittling that you suggest -again- the carbohydrate issue to people with such serious and and often crippling diseases as MS. Not all "inconveniences" in life are owing to carbohydrate intake.

Dr Berg did a medical degree but before the end realised that throwing pills at people wasn't addressing the root problem so he did not do the final year of clinical practice for the MD qualification. He's not the only one advocating diet as part of the treatment of many of our modern diseases. youtu.be/VA1Y-_-iRm8?si=OpZ...

Eryl, there is a lot of controversy surrounding Dr Wahls. She said she had 'cured' her MS by diet alone. However, there is increasing evidence that she had stem cell therapy for her MS.Stem Cell therapy kills the Epstein Barr Virus in the cells. She's made a lot of money from her diet books.

Yes, she may have had stem cell therapy as part of her treatment but she also used diet as the basis of her protocol.

So she hasn't cured her MS with diet. The stem cell therapy cured it by killing all the Epstein Barr virus in her body.Diet doesn't kill EBV.

Oh wow, this is heartbreaking. And, somewhat baffling. Folks with MS don't get a break. If they get back to Joolsg let us know. I'd be interested to know their response, too.

No response so far, but that's normal. Most research papers have a lead author to contact, but they rarely reply to queries.
