doppler ultrasound scan and restless legs

My R LS was just settling down nicely this week with having to get out and walk only a couple of times a night.

Then suddenly ;Bam! it was back again to square one with twitching and jerking all night

So what was different that day that might have caused the subsequent night time misery?

That afternoon ,around 1500, i had a Doppler ultrasound scan on my left leg because it was swollen and my GP was concerned about a possible DVT.

Has any one had a similar experience following an ultra sound scan?

Does anyone know if ultra sound scans can affect RLS and/or PLMD?

Thank you in advance for your replies

Trigger?

Any medication or food - maybe a little treat for doing the scan??

An ultrasound shouldn't affect RLS. I agree with Madlegs1. Have you taken anything different even OTC or eaten a different food or changed your lifestyle in any way?

Maybe the original swelling of the leg was the main reason for the worsening?

. I do hope it is settling again now🤗

The cause of the swelling was probably also the cause of the RLS. The main cause of RLS is inflamation of the nerves and what is causing inflammation of the nerves is also causing inflammation in your blood vessels restrictng flow. Inflammation is often caused by food we eat like sugary or starchy foods, or by refined vegetable oil. It can also be caused by artificial food preservatives (e.g. E202)., and food allergies.

hi - I had a Doppler scan a few weeks ago. No effect at all. A few weeks before that, I had a course of antibiotics for a chest infection. That immediately disrupted the relief I had received from moving onto Gabapentin (thanks to Sue and the Mayo algorithm- I also now have a GP with a good knowledge of RLS), and it has taken a month in total to get back to “normal” (which is a 90 percent reduction in symptoms). This is a long way of saying that it probably wasn’t the Doppler test but something else that was the “trigger”. Best of luck identifying it- I know the frustration of that search and the nature of RLS is that sometimes, in my opinion, there isn’t a cause - it just happens.

Orally taken antibiotics distrupts gut microbiome and there are some research/theories that imbalances in our gut could be one of the reasons of RLS.

I manage my rls with fairly strict anti inflammatory diet and a working knowledge of my own triggers which mainly consist of white carbohydrates and high glutamate foods. I also take a hefty amount of magnesium every night. And an iron tablet every second morning. This sort of works and the nights that it doesn’t I take a small amount of codeine (one 15 mg tablet and one cocodamol 15/8) which usually helps me to sleep. Putting my personal data all together I have become convinced that food affects my microbiome and that is where the solution lies. However most fermented foods are very high in glutamate so that makes gut health short cuts difficult. Anyway kefir seems to work so I have a cup of that every day.

Perhaps the big solution to this nightmare condition does lie in the microbiome and it is there that research should be looking.

Thanks- that definitely makes sense.

Thanks

great wisdom

I think ,with our condition, it can take a long time, after. a disruption, to get back to "normal'.

10 days ago I was put on a diuretic by GP.

OK for 4 days and then;Bam; off we go.

Had to double my neupro patches to get some peace. And then try and come back down again. Indeed this can take a long time ie weeks

And I agree with you, sometimes bad things just happen. We suffer from a very complex multi causal condition. So no one really always knows why

The cause of fluid retension is often the over consumption of sugar and refined carbs.
