I have been diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases in the past years, and because of celiac, and microscopic colitis, my nutritional needs have not been met for quite a while. Specifically I was not getting enough iron. I tried all of the varieties, and read about the absorption rates . When I had blood tests, they indicated low iron. And then I started to get leg cramps. I still am not sure if they are RLS or nocturnal leg cramps but most of the time I am very sleep deprived.
I found this article about something called the Lucky Iron Fish. The story was that in some third world countries children are anemic. A group of concerned individuals developed a way for them to get more iron. It is the LuckyIronFish. It is a small iron fish that you drop in a pan that has 4 cups of boiling water in it. Add 3 drops of vinegar or lemon ( to help release the iron ) and boil it for 10 minutes. Take it out, dry it off and use it again the next day. Drink the water all day long. Or you can put it in sauces or smoothies etc. It is similar to getting iron by cooking in a wrought iron pan.
This is not some kind of scam. It has been tested by various reputable groups. Just Google it and you can see that it is legitimate. You can buy it on Amazon but I bought the actual Lucky Iron Fish and not an imitation. I still have some cramps but the creepy, crawly itchy , twitchy part is now gone. You have to use this about 3-6 months to restore your iron supplies. I am looking forward to seeing my doctor after my next blood test, to see if the iron levels have changed.

I don't really know. I think it would depend on each individual. I have tried all sorts of iron tablets and they have not raised my iron levels. I have celiac and microscopic colitis which makes it hard for me to obtain the nutrients that I need from foods. Because the iron coming from the fish is in its ionic state in the water, I would guess it is more easily absorbed in the stomach than when it has to be broken down and released from the other element it is attached to. I can drink it all day, it keeps me hydrated, and supposedly in 3-6 months you can restore you iron reserves. And if it does work, then I guess it would be cheaper because I don't have to buy iron pills. It lasts about 5 years. And I forget but I think you get about 8-9 mg of iron from it each day. They have really researched this so you can read about it online.
It may work better for you but one really needs 35 mg elemental iron a day or every other day (what's in ferrous sulfate) or the 25 mg of elemental iron in gentle iron so it's not really a good choice for others.
