This is commonly used when a patient is doing a slow tapered withdrawal from a drug or treatment, as - while the intention is that the slowness of the withdrawal minimises problems - it is still possible that symptoms will get temporarily worse at each stage.
If this is the case, the patient should then wait until the symptoms settle - i.e. return to or near to the previous state - before moving to the next stage of the withdrawal.
