Varicose veins are caused by oestrogen which is regulated by a hormone called aromatase which made in a woman's ovaries in the adrenal glands and by fat in the body converting testoterone into oestrogen. The thing that causes RLS is mostly high blood sugar which is also the origin of fat in your body. High consumption of carbs can cause RLS and varicose veins.

Eryl,Carbs and sugar have a negative effect on my RLS. You seem to have advanced knowledge in the nutrition/RLS relationship. Do yòu have medical or nutritional training? I ask because your advice seems to be spot on and I would be estatic to be able to eliminate all meďications and control my RLS with diet and èxercise. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I have no formal training in either beyond school. I am a retired engineer and as such am fascinated with how things work down to the finest detail. I have also been a keen cyclist most of my life and therefore have relised the impacts of nutirtion on performance and health. (it may help that I have Asperger's traits and obessively research subjects).

I have over the years learned which websites and Youtube doctors to trust. Shout out to Dr Robert Lustig, Dr Mark Hyman, Dr William Davis, Dr Aseem Malhotra, Dr Suneel Dhand and Dr Eric Berg to name but a few.

p.s. you don't need carbohydrates at all unless you are doing intentsive prolonged excersise. The body has ways of converting fat and protein into glucose

Sorry. I had to go out before completing my answer. My belief is that the majority of RLS is due to inflammation of the nerves and the main cause of the inflammation is carbs (especially refined carbs as in flour) wheat has a great effect bcause the refind carbs come with gluten which causes leky gut and faster absorption. On top of that modern wheat (as Dr William Davis explains) has addictive properties which make it hard for many people to give up.

Another thing which can cause inflammation is refined seed oils (as in sunflower oil, canola oil etc becaues they are polyunsaturated and cause oxidative stress so I only use olive oil, coconut oil, butter or animal fats.

I also keep my fruit consumption down and when I do eat fruit it's usualy blueberries which are low in fructose and high in antioxidants. By rigorously driving down my inflammation I have eliminated my RLS without medication.
