Are you taking just one dose per day. What form of oxycodone is it?
If it is one dose, then depending on the form ,you are only covered for 6 to 12 hours. What is your body telling you about the rest of the day?.
Sounds like you are suffering withdrawal.
Oxycodone needs to be spread out over the full 24 hrs.
Take 1 x 5mg in morning, then 10mg at night. First 4 nights were lovely, then suddenly last night back to how it was before Oxycodone
I don't know how you take your oxycodone but I take a 5 mg pill which I cut in half and start taking the pills at 5 pm and then every hour until 11 pm and this works for me. Keep experimenting until you get the right dose.
I have been taking Oxycodone hydrochloride 5mg for 2 weeks, after taking Tramadol for sometime until they stopped working . My GP said to take 1 capsule in the evening followed by another 6 hours later, if required. I am also taking 1800 Gabapentin (3x600mg every 2 hours finishing at 11pm). I have had to take the second tablet every night, usually around 1 am. Like you the first 3 nights worked well, but I now find myself walking and thrashing around much the same as before I changed from Tramadol. I find the Oxycodone take a good 1-2 hours to take effect and I feel very disorientated after taking the second, even after having a couple of hours precious sleep! I agreed to give it a good trial before discussing moving to Buprenorphine, when I feel I will have exhausted all my options.
I have been taking oxycodone for some time and lately something has changed. I used to take 5 mg at 6 pm and sleep all night. Then I started waking and having to take another on occasion. Then every night. For the first time in my life, I’m waking up in agony around 5 or 6 am!
Now I take one around 8 pm and try to sleep without a second. Dr Buchfuhrer suggested I take another half as well if needed. He also said it is better to stay ahead of the pain rather than medicate the pain back down.
I feel like I haven’t found the right dosage or timing. I really hoped not to go up in dosage but looks like that may be the case.
Here in the US, I've been taking 10 mg of methadone per day for over 4 years now, with excellent results - sleep like a baby for 8 hours. UK doctors are scared of methadone for RLS, but some are prescribing buprenorphine with good results.
I have asked to switch to methadone but my doctor didn’t want me to. Now I have not been able to get oxy for a month in the US and luckily had a bit of a stash. Wondering if I should switch to mentado e.
How could you switch to methadone if your doctor doesn't want you to? The Mayo Clinic algorithm suggests methadone is the best low-dose opioid for RLS symptoms, all other things being equal.
i’m just beginning treatment with the doctor. He wanted me to stay on oxy since it was working but now it doesn’t be appear to be working as well. That’s what made me think I might want to switch to something else. I will discuss it with him during my next check up. Oxy has also because difficulty to obtain, at least in my new state in the US, Nevada. I am concerned about the long-term effects of Oxy, including permanent brain alteration, resulting in the feeling of increased pain. Are you having any side effects with methadone?
I believe that one of the reasons that the Mayo Clinic favors low-dose methadone over other opioids for RLS treatment is that, at these low doses, there seldom seems to be a build up of tolerance. I talked to a patient at Dr. Buchfuhrer's who stayed at 10 mg per day for 8 years; I have, myself, been at that same dosage for over 4 years.
I live in NV too, but have had to go to Dr. B's in Downey, CA, to get my prescription. Dr. B. is one of the authors of the Mayo Clinic's algorithm regarding RLS - that might be worth mentioning to your doctor, as it seems that NV doctors are not aware of the Mayo clinic's work in this regard.
I am seeing Dr. Buchfuhrer as well, though I’ve only had two appointments so far. Have been back in Vegas (grew up here) for two months and have had an impossible time getting Oxy. Just had it called to CA and will just make the drive in to pick it up once a month I guess. Crazy!
Glad to hear the methadone is helping you. Oxy is also keeping me up… feel asleep at 13 and am already awake again 30 minutes later.
NV will require you to visit Dr. B. in person once every 6 months. Walmart on Nellis refused to fill my prescription, no questions asked, when I first presented it to them 4 years ago. Smith's on Pecos, after some negotiation, learning that it was for RLS, has been filling it since then, sometimes seeming reluctantly.
