Heart burn meds and RLS
Omperazole worsens RLS. All PPI meds do.Switch to a magnesium based indigestion med like gaviscon or a really effective probiotic like Symprove or VSL.
Hi, sylsherbs,
I'm not a daily user of omeprazole, but was on it for 10 days straight last year for a flair-up. My RLS symptoms did not increase, but I did not expect them to, in that I've been on a low-dose methadone regime for several years, in which time these symptoms have been under complete control. Hope you're doing well.
Ouch! Stopped using Gaviscon and went onto Lansoprazole as I thought it was safer than Gaviscon. Away on hols at the moment and RLS is much improved so not sure if it is increased Gabapentin or my rather relaxed attitude and failure to take Lansprazole daily.Trying to keep things stable so that I can do proper tests but too many variables at the moment!
Hi,I've been taking lansoprazole occasionally, took one yesterday and had a terrible night,RLS just didn't ease until 5 this morning, never realised that ppi's worsened the RLS.
I was on Omeprazole for a while and it caused agonising stomach cramps but I have IBS. I have read on here that lots of people have a problem with Omeprazole or similar proton pump inhibitors. It also cause a loss of taste. You might be better off taking Cimetadine or a similar acid blocker rather than a PPI.
I use omeprazole every day found no difference to my RLS or taste even went without for a few days RLS still the same. I also suffer with IBS mine is stress related so IBS-D. Not stress from RLS. As usual everyone can have a different experience
PPIs such as Omeprazole are designed to lower the acidity level in the stomach. There is a theory that the low-acid environment can inhibit iron absorption, but the link isn't proven.
Same thing happened to me with omeprazole. I stopped taking it and things settled back down to normal.
I went on it years ago and had terrible leg cramps and other side effects. I researched and came up with this regimen to deal with LPRD (silent GERD). I was brought to this when I developed laryngitis that was so bad I could barely speak and I am a teacher!
1. Don't eat several hours before bed (3-4) and eat healthier (less fatty, greasy foods, etc.).
2. Sleep on an incline (I've had a wedge from Medcline for years).
3. Drink 8oz of high pH water (8.8 or higher) first thing in the morning to neutralize pepsin that may have been deposited in the esophagus from any GERD.
I have been able to control my symptoms without any meds and their long-term damage. This seemed a safer way to deal with Barretts, but I should go back to have it scoped again.
I never had to take nexium until I started taking ropinirole. Ropinirole tore my stomach up so much that even after stopping ropinirole because of augmentation 4 yrs ago, I can’t stop the nexium. Every time I try I get terrible heart burn. I can’t say that it ever makes my RLS worse than any other time. Maybe because my RLS is in control with CBD/THC Good luck.
