while i do get the aches and muscle spasms, i deal with the discomfort and restlessness even more. i just feel like i need to walk around and move. a lot of the remedies i see talk about pain relief and not so much relief from the restlessness, so i’m a little confused as to what i should do while waiting for testing. yesterday symptoms started around 2:45-3:00pm, but today i experienced it as soon as i woke up. i’ve taken 300 mg of gabapentin and 10 mg of inderal for 2 nights (i know it takes a bit for relief). i’m just wondering if anyone experiences anything similar.

also, has anyone had experience with inderal making their symptoms worse at this low dose? i’m not taking it for RLS, it’s just there in case my heart rate and blood pressure spike.

Propranolol i.e. inderal, is a beta blocker and can make RLS worse.

The principal defining symptom of RLS is the "urge to move" i.e. restlessness, NOT pain or spasms. Some people do experience these as part of their RLS but they're not a necessary criteria. "Unpleasant sensations" are part of the criteria.

In addition, pain and spasms can be caused by other conditions.

It's unusual for RLS symptoms to occur in the morning. According to the diagnostic criteria it usually occurs or is worse at night. However in some cases after a medicine taken for RLS wears off, the symptoms can get worse - this is called "rebound" which might explain your morning symptoms.

Although opioids, which are often used as painkillers, can alleviate RLS symptoms, painkillers generally do not.

If you've taken gabapentin for your RLS then I assume it's been prescribed. It usually requires that it be taken daily for up to 4 weeks before becoming fully effective for RLS. In addition, it has to be an effective dose and the average effective dose is 900mg.

It's a shame, that apparently somebody has prescribed you gabapentin fir RLS before exploring other options, when you're so young.

One option is to ensure you are clear of all other medicines that might exacerbate RLS e.g. inderal and any form of sedating antihistamine such as anti-psychotic medicines.

Another option is to have blood tests to detect iron degiciency which is a major factor in RLS. This mrans bloodctests for serum iron, transferrin, ferritin and haemoglobin.

It's recommended that anybody with a ferritin level of less than 75ug/L start taking an oral iron supplement. The aim of this is to raise the ferritin level to at least 100ug/L. This can relieve symptoms in 50% of cases. Others need a higher ferritin level, at least 200ug/L.

This should be tried, really, before starting any medication.

I've not heard of inferdal. I was on ropinorol for several years and was suffering from augmentation without realising it, thinking it was just my restless legs getting worse. With the help of this site I went on to gabapentin , 300mg and after the first couple of weeks I've been brilliant, hardly any restless legs. So grateful for the information and support received.
