A sort of mystery

martino profile image

I woke a 5.00am this morning feeling rested, calm and PAIN free! What bliss. Only 6 hours sleep but what a nice experience. The mystery bit is why this should happen. The activity yesterday was fairly normal, food much the same and meds the same. If this could continue I would be a very contented chap but meantime I am just basking in the moment. Sorry about the smugness but just wanted to share this

Wow! That’s awesome! You’re right; this syndrome is a mystery! I also have nights that fluctuate dramatically even though I haven’t changed my routine, foods, meds., etc.

BTW, you’re post made me think of something. I recently got back to Norway from vacation in the States and have had some uncharacteristically (never thought I’d say that!!!) bad nights. After reading this, though, it made me realize that maybe it’s due to my body still being messed up medicine -, food-, etc.-wise!

Do others find that changes to food, environment etc adversely affect RLS. I ask this as I am off on holiday next week

in reply tomartino

Is this a question for me or the forum? Asking because don’t want to miss a question directed at me. 😀

Not being entirely clear how it all works I suppose it was a question for anyone who read it but, of course, feel free to answer! On reflection I could have asked the question separately

Yes,,- your environment plays a huge part. Yesterday, you omitted some trigger that normally would set you off.

Enjoy smug- rls will wipe the smile off your face soon enough 😪

I initially detected an artificial preservative (E202) as a strong trigger for me. It took a long time to pin it down. It was a night like you've just described, with no symptoms. I racked my brains to think what I hadn't eaten the previous day, and initially thought it was bread, but after weeks of experimentation I realised that it was margarine, the stuff the advertise as being healthy. It appears that the preservative is used in almost every margarine and many dips, sauces and 'wet' foods.

I was mostly clear of rls, but did suffer occasionally and it took me a long time to realise that those times were when my blood sugar was high. I now avoid all sweetened foods, and try not to overload on carbohydrates.

Hi Martino,

RLS seems to be inconsistent. I’ve had spells of thinking I’ve found the cause, only to find it returns with a vengeance for no discernable reason

This happens to me, too, on odd occasions. Bliss, as you say. I will be happy with five hours in a row.

I always assume, idiotically, that it will continue. But it doesn't.

I too have searched for triggers, for reasons, for changes in the day, and found none. One day is much like the next.

Who knows?

You are right of course. Last night was the familiar pattern but I have the memory!

in reply tomartino

Yes! And what a wonderful memory it is! It’s great to have that, isn’t it?

Parminter profile image

Yup! And it can happen again.

Two nights ago I had a great night, then a crummy one, now I'm in the middle of a disastrous one.

I shouldn’t have been smug. I think my pain this morning is the worst it has been. Thankfully the Gabapentin dulls it within 30mins or so.

Do not punish yourself for smugness, It was joy plus hope. Followed by disaster. We go through this cycle endlessly.

Thanks. My glass is half full. The Gabapentin has done its job and all is well again! Sort of, anyway.

After augmenting and discontinuing Ropinirole I was virtually symptom free for almost 6 weeks. But it returned little at a time.

I do that too. On those exceedingly rare days where I feel almost normal, I'm like...Okay, what brought that on?! I've yet to figure it out. But I glory in those times. They are precious.

I had severe RLS for 9 miserable years - a litany of pills and lots of pain pills. I finally bit the bullet and paid $700 for a Relaxis pad and I am pain free. I only need to use the pad once every week or so! It was designed by a doctor who had RLS. The pad can also be rented.

I would urge anyone with RLS to give it a try. Oddly neither my GP nor my neurologist had ever heard of it! Check the internet!

I have a relaxis pad but sadly only found it intermittently helpful. Maybe I will dust it off an try it again. It is great to hear of someone who found it useful.

Thanks Darena. I wonder whether one can be rented in the UK? I’ll do some research

Yes, I sometimes get a run of good nights and/or days then a run of horrific ones. I latch on to anything that was different but trials prove it not to be the case!
