Ropinirole, safe dose to avoid augmentation??

Can anyone advise me please, on a safe dose of Ropinirole in order to avoid augmentation.

I have been taking .75 mg for a year, and it certainly helps my RSL, but after reading all the posts from fellow sufferers, I am concerned about augmentation.

Ι really dont believe that there is a safe dose for a dopamine agonist.I was on 0.09 of pram for 4 years and 1×0.18 for another 1 +1/2 year which is a very low dose but i developed augmentation.I am now on a withdrawal phase from pram.

But everybody is different.Keep that in mind.

Thanks for your advice Katerina. I am trying to manage my RSL with other means. Have upped my magnesium and will try support stockings. Will keep looking for non drug help. Eventually hope to get off meds if at all possible. If not, limit them to the lowest possible dose.

Hi Jenny,

.75mg is a low dose and if you stick to that, you should hopefully avoid augmentstion. If it stops working, don’t be tempted to increase the dose. That would be the time to switch meds.

You are aware of Augmentation, so you are in a strong position.

You will hopefully have many years on Ropinirole- I had around 9 years before Augmentation happened.

Thanks so much for your advice Joolsg.

There is a relationship between serum ferritin levels and augmentation apparently. Get your serum ferritin checked and aim to get it over 100 (make sure you get the actual figure from your GP).

The other thing is to make sure you don’t increase the dose. It is handy to have a fall back option in case you find the pramipexole ceases to be so effective. I have often wondered whether reducing/eliminating the dose as soon as it reduces in effectiveness for a temporary period would prolong the time it can be used for.

I am now experimenting with that, having recently reintroduced a 0.044 dose of pramipexole to my regime.

Jenny. There is no safe dose of Ropinirol!!!!! Stay away!

I take it you had a bad experience with Ropinerole, so i can understand your comment. BUT, the information that Joolsg gave was good advice. Keeping the dose as low as possible is what the RLS experts are now recommending.

I started with .25mg of Ropinirole, enjoyed great relief for a couple months then increased it to .5, and within a year was up to 1mg and augmenting. It was extremely difficult to eliminate, even with a supportive sleep doctor.

The manufacturers say it’s only effective short term low dose. John Hopkins Dr Earley says it’s only a matter of time. No safe dose. Avoid regret, stay away!

To everyone who has replied to my questions. Thanks so much for your help.

I am finding I get some noticeable relief from wearing compression stockings. If it continues, i will try and reduce the ropinirole. Has anyone else tried compression stockings?
