I have been on Rotigitine Patches now for quite a while, but they now don't seem to work as good. Can anyone recommend a better drug. My Doctor really doesn't understand this condition. I don't have creepy crawly feelings but severe spasms. I always seem to need higher dosages of any drugs because of my size I suppose.

Every drug is great for RLS - if it works for you! Some people find Tramadol works well, others experience really bad effects from it. Sorry but it is a case of trial and error imho.

I used Mirapexin which was great, initially. After a while the dose had to be increased and then increased and again. The side-effects were terrible and I ended up with things worse than when I started!

I then used Tramadol which was fantastic...until it stopped working. The it was Cannabis which was great...sometimes, some strains were no good.

Then came Kratom which was, is, and (unfortunately likely for me) to likely to always be fantastic...until the criminals in Britain got together to push through more unthoughtful, self-serving and harmful legislation which will prevent me getting it :( .

I now use the Neupro, (Rotigotine) Patch which is good...so far, (a similar drug to the Mirapexin I couldn't tolerate) AND Targinact - a strong opioid drug. Again my body will seek Homoeostasis, (as will everyone's), which means my tolerance will increase and the effectiveness of the drug will fall and I will be off searching for something new :( .

There are some get benefit from Benzodiazepines but I've not been offered them by the GP.Its grim sounding but there are enough drugs that can be cycled round that should help various opiate pain killers, Pregabalin, the list goes on.

Plenty of info here:

Good luck.

raffs, how do you find the targinact. ? Its one i havent tried yet. My tolerance to meds are low. They all make me sleepy the next day. So, thinking this would also do the same. I havent seen many people mention that they have taken it.

I don't know, I'm on the 40/20mg preparation but I am also on the 2mg Neupro patch. If I miss one or the other the legs are crawling, with them they are mostly pretty good - some nights its a little restless but compared to how things are its pretty good. Better than the top dose of the last opioid I tried, (the name escapes me at the moment).

I'm not sure how good that speaks for the individual drugs!

I have no problems with opiates/opioids causing any side-effects other than withdrawal.

Raffs, that's horrible the England has outlawed kratom. Is there any place close at all to you where you could get it? France perhaps? I know that it is also illegal in Ireland.

Hi march1044 - yeah it is a crying shame that more knee-jerk and ill thought out legislation is being pushed through, more people will suffer and die - but politicians don't care about that!

If it is illegal in destination country most places don't ship, but I am sure it will be put out as an additive for making something benign and sneak around it that way.

I've stocked up with about 8 lb of the stuff and between that and the prescription drugs I get I should be able to keep going for longer.

The whole Irish and now UK analogue laws, to me anyway, help highlight the corruption of politicians and the way laws will be passed without the proper examination of facts, as many drugs now illegal are much MUCH more safe than two of the exemptions - one drug which is exempt IF USED AS MANUFACTURES EXPECT IT TO WILL KILL 50% OF ITS USERS - yet it is still legal - go figure!!!!

I took Requip for about 5 years and it worked great. However, my system got used to it so I changed to Meripex and that is working just as well. Some doctors have a closed mind to RLS - if you can't get help, change doctors. I had to fight WWII before I could get my doctor to prescribe Requip....now she gives it to other patients with the same problem. She calls me her RLS expert.

Gonzo 123,

WE will never be able to convey the feeling we have when suffering from RLS. MY neurologist specializes in RLS and even he wants to catagorize it as a sleep disorder.

I keep telling him that if we could find a way to stop RLS, then sleep problems would disappear unless you are an obese person whose air passages fall shut when you relax into the sleep mode. Before I rebelled and told him he had to do better I bought two breathing devices and couldn't use either because excessive movement was my problem and not sleep apnea.

When a doctor has RLS they self medicate with samples extorted from drug salesmen and having pharmacists whom they know fill prescriptions for opiates far beyond what they will prescribe for us. May heroin addicts and alcoholics are really responding to their RLS. Half the suicides are people who are so sleep deprived they are not rational and if treated properly wouldn't be suicidal. Who cares if an 80 year old is drug dependent, if it keeps him functional and he doesn't do it for recreation or fun.

I get a tightly controlled amount of vicodin and have on occasion taken another half pill just to get relief and sleep a little while. I then have to take half the dosage for several days to last until i get another prescription.
