These are the kind of responses that go around in my head which I don't have the guts to say to people who are so rude. I honestly don't think it helps to reply with the blunt and honest truth, as they are unwilling to hear it and just make worse assumptions about us based on what they believe are our rude replies. I don't have an answer to this problem except maybe to make a clear statement to the person, unemotionally and without sarcasm. Then avoid them. I know that's radical, but I have had to do it just to get mental and emotional peace. What do others think about this?

I spoke to a woman at a community event (film club - a passive activity!) a few weeks ago. She asked me how come I was at the event so I explained that I'd been on sick leave for a number of weeks and I wanted to get out of the house with an activity that wasn't demanding.

She told me that I 'looked too young' to be at the event, making me feel very uncomfortable.

Fast forward to this week - the same woman spoke to me again. It turns out that I used to work with her son-in-law. She told me that she'd described me as 'looking very healthy' and having 'dark, shiny hair' and miraculously her son-in-law knew who I was!

I don't know how I kept my cool! She clearly thinks I'm not ill and I'm just skiving off work. When your illness is invisible people just seem to think they have the right to make comment.
