Hiya Jim, a big welcome to this lovely quit site, thats just ace pal, you've made the first Vital decision, and thats to quit :) :)

Now then, you ask what the difference is between miniature cigars and cigarettes, and my answer to that is, I aint got a flippin clue :D :D

All I know is that they will both kill us :( so you have made the right choice, as in quit :)

May I ask if you are using any NRT to help you :o

Pete :)

Hi Jimigolf,

this is a very good question, and will probably result in a very long answer...

Originally, tobacco products such as cigars, pipes, cigarillos etc were designed to be smoked in a different way from cigarettes. Once they have been lit, the smoker puffs in the smoke but should not inhale the smoke, just taste it in their mouth and blow it out.

In effect, the smoker would be less at risk from lung cancer, (although they can still get it) and at a higher risk of getting oral cancers (tongue, mouth cheek etc).

Cigarette smoking however, requires the smoker to inhale the smoke into their lungs. Obviously this then puts the smoker at a high risk of developing lung cancer as well as the above cancers mentioned when smoking other tobacco products.

Since many people are trying to save money, they think it is cheaper to smoke these other products instead of cigarettes. However, having been long term cigarette smokers, they are used to inhaling the smoke and quite often find themselves 'naturally' inhaling the smoke of their newly chosen product. This then increases the likelihood of them developing all or any of the above.

I have only talked about cancers, obviously there are other ill-health effects related to smoking that may encountered; Every part of your body can be affected from the top of your head right down to the tip of your toe.

If it doesn't kill you, it will harm you :-(

Have a look through the following link on pipe and cigar smoking;

There is also some more information on the ill health effects of smoking on the body here;

Many thanks for your replies, and yes i'm using patches. At the moment it's the habit of smoking that's hard but the thought of new golf shoes with the money saved is my target.

The key to successfully remain smoke-free is to plan :-)

If you can understand what it was you thought you enjoyed about smoking then this will also make it easier to stay stopped.

Think about all your reasons for wanting to stop smoking, remember your reasons for staying stopped and then respect the fact that this might not be easy, but is most definitely worth it.

Every time you get a craving, remember that this is a positive sign of recovery. If the craving becomes too much for you, the first thing that you ought to do is check that you have remembered to pop your patch on or that it hasn't fallen off :-/

Any craving will usually only last a matter of minutes, the more of them that you overcome, the easier it gets :-)

The patches will help you with the physical side to cravings, however you have the power to control the psychological cravings. Just because these types of cravings are in your head, this doesn't mean to say it's all wishy washy stuff. The mind is a very powerful tool, remember to stay in control :-)

How long do you think it will take to save up your smoking money for your new golf shoes?

You can do this :D
