Hiya John and welcome to our community.

I think it's a problem that we all have/had and like all the other things that go on with our bodies when we quit, it will settle down in time. I think it's just that we want to put something into our mouths as we're not sucking on that white stick any more and our mind is telling us that we want more. (that's how it was with me anyway. :o )

It's also a known fact that our metabolism goes down by 10 percent when we quit so it's not rocket science to work out that the odds are stacked against you to gain weight. The way to deal with it is first to get much further down the quit road and gain confidence and then try to tackle any weight issues.

It might be a god idea to look back in some of the archives to find some of our chats on the subject plus we've also given lots of snacking tips so you can try to minimise the problem.

Congratulations on getting into your 5th week and we look forward to you coming and joining in the daily chat. Andi :)

Hi John ,

Congratulations on going 4 weeks without cigarettes. I think everyone adds pounds when they stop smoking. I anticipated the weight gain and changed my diet the day i quit. I take a bag of fruit with me to work and that is my daily food. For tea i have either chicken breast or steak with a huge wok of stir fry veg. I have started having breakfast which i never did before and that's porridge. If i didn't work such irregular hours, i would go to the gym and swim again, but, i have long days and my energy level is practically zero when i get home.

I do walk on a weekend. I bought an i pod, rucksack and all the walking accoutrements in preparation, prior to stopping.

Stay positive and remember, losing weight is a lot easier than quitting the weed. One hurdle at a time. Looking forward to you posting 5 weeks cigarette free.

I have put on half a stone in six months and I,m over the moon as I have always been a size 6. Its great and I am delighted because everyone who I bump into says how well I look, but the best part is I have a good reason to SHOP SHOP SHOP, need to buy bigger clothes, Yippee. Dont worry about the weight as it has to be easier to lose some than quit smoking. Anyone who feels they need to get rid of a few pounds can pass them on to me. I want another half a stone and that will make me happy.

Good luck to you all,

Madmad

Hi John, and welcome to this lovely site, a big well done for getting to 4 weeks quit :) :)

I think the Girls have said it all, I think quitting smoking is the hardest thing i have tried to do, so losing a bit of weight after, will be like a walk in the park, as they say :)

Keep the good work up John cus i would love you to get to 5weeks and on and on :) :) speak soon.

Pete :)

I found that when I first stopped I drank loads of tea and ate lots of chocolate biscuits. I did gain weight which was annoying as I was already overweight. But soon you will feel so positive and good that you will exercise more and eventually lose the weight you have gained. I still drink loads of tea and skive a lot at work making it. I stopped back at the end of Feb and am still the same weight I was back then. I felt a right failure diet wise BUT to think I'm now smoke free and didn't gain anything in the long run is pretty good going, so stick with the not smoking as the health and wealth benefit is so much better than being a skinny mini with fag breath
