7 weeks in and I've been coughing like crazy or the last 2 - 3 weeks. Sometimes it's productive others just a constant tickle. Normal???

Wondering why you have that awful dry cough? Or why you are couphing up all that horrible 'stuff'?

Here's a reason why it may be;

Smoking paralyses the tiny hairs, or cilia, which line your windpipe and helps to clear dirt and mucus out of your lungs. When you stop smoking, the cilia start to work properly again and so you may experience more coughing and phlegm. If you can imagine all those hairs laying flat for so long and now that you've stopped they kind of say "right lads, let's get back to work again" and as they start to move it causes a dry tickle... This is a positive sign of recovery, showing that your body is getting rid of the tar and toxins which smoking has left in your lungs.

These symptoms may last a while but can be soothed by drinking plenty of water or using sugar-free boiled sweets to help keep your throat moist.

Remembering that you are only coughing up what is not supposed to be there in the first place

However, if you're coughing persists and you become worried, please make an appointment to see your GP.

I am five months in and still periodically have a cough, sometimes productive sometimes not and mine is now caused by medications that I am on, as Jillygirl says see the Doctor after a few weeks if it's still there but at the moment perfectly normal although not very nice, good luck x

I'm 6 months and still cough, mostly in the morning now. Yesterday I coughed up a massive lump of brown rubbish.

Pently of fluids and hard boiled sweets help. Its also worth mentioned it to your GP just for reassurance. I think it's worth them having a listen and maybe an xray.

I also still have SOB at times (although I'm convinced that is anxiety related).

But besides the above, when I'm not coughing I can definitely breath easier now than I ever could, I don't smell (fags anyway) I have more money (spending it all on food thou) haha.

So keep with it. It may take some time, but as Emjay post said. Your only coughing up what's not meant to be there...
