Sorry Hicval but I do not think there is. My husband was diagnosed with PSP in October 2010 and prior to that he had a strict regime of supplements and vitamens and generally healthy living. Since his diagnosis, we have expanded this regime to include ginkgo-bilboa, co-enzyme 10, no fat or sugar in his diet, acupuncture, chinese herbs, chiropractic and yoga, plus he is on the drugs trials with Davenutide. Sadly his condition is deterioating, I can't say how it compares because I know each person is different.

Having said that, he enjoys yoga very much and feels that it is doing him good, so perhaps that is the most important thing.

I wish you joy Hicval and take care.

Thank you Dorothy, he's been asking about Reishi mushrooms, which is generally good. He is a complete neophyte to supplements. I appreciate your answer. Not sure if he's going to go the drug route as yet - all new, just yesterday, this news!

I know it's 'cause unknown' but is there any evidence that exposure to heavy metals and welding gases can be a cause of PSP, do you know?

I'm reading the book "Finding Meaning With Charles" which about a wife who dealt with a husband with PSP. It outlines all the things that they tried but didn't work. They didn't find an answer to something that worked or slowed the disease. Just as Dorothy-Thompson indicated in her many trials there doesn't seem to be an answer at the moment, only research. If you find anything that helps let us know!!

Hi Hicval,

Same as above for Jeff. He tried Chinese medicine, acupuncture, stem cell replacement (twice) and nothing halted or slowed the progress. Jeff has always maintained exceptionally good health habits for his entire life. The PSP grabs you and doesn't let go no matter how well you have taken care of yourself!

We also asked about outside bio or chemical influences and were told that no one knew for sure.

If you find anything, let us all know!

Hi there - we tried acupuncture, chinese herbs and all sorts of vitamins etc but nothing seemed to work. I hope what you try works for you. My dad was never around metals - he was a school teacher -very very fit (played raquetball 5 x per week ever since I can remember) -never drank or smoked -maintained a healthy weight -he was never overweight. His family has bad hearts so he spent his whole life eating well and staying physically fit and at consistant weight to ward off a heart attack but instead got this terrible disease. So cruel - -however i do believe that his physcial fitness aided in his longevity and overall health outside of PSP.

This is astounding! People who have not abused their bodies, getting this disease. You all must be asking what is the cause of this? Additives and chemicals in our foods? External environmental toxins when these folks were young...in the lakes they swam in? Does it affect only really hard-working people...our guy was one of them, maniacal, genius, high achiever, stressed with too smart a view on the problems of the world. Does that describe your loved one? Trying to find a common thread.

Remember folks, I'm two days into this, new and curious and gob-smacked and shocked, incredulous and wanting to make sense...

Pls share your wisdom.

The only thing I know that causes PSP is old age, that seems to be the most determining factor. I believe most research revolves around defective tau protein as a central cause of PSP. The real underlying cause could be anything? Maybe a head trauma or stroke causes it, maybe genetic, possibly a deficiency of some sort, maybe an overactive autoimmune response to some environmental toxins, virus or bacteria? I've tried various supplements and vitamins, but they become more of a hassle because it is difficult to give supplements to someone who finds it increasingly difficult to swallow, especially when they are probably having little to no positive effect. I would just concerntrate on giving that person a balanced diet, and simply time and attention.

Good Luck.

Yes you are right that to get PSP in your late 40s, early 50s is young by todays standards, but why don't children, teenagers, people in their 20s and 30s get PSP? There maybe a clue to its cause by looking at age and time as a factor? Maybe this disease is there in very young people but because its so slow to develop its symptoms it only becomes apparent in later life? Maybe the person must be exposed to some external factor or deficient in some nutrient for many years before they show signs of PSP?

I'm not aware of any solution but if you read the book "Finding Meaning In Life with Charles" (written by a woman whose husband had PSP) she outlines all of the things they tried. From acupuncture, holistic med, etc. etc. and none helped. Great book for caregivers of family with PSP. I don't gain anything from touting the book but it did open my eyes and help me.

After many many hours of research I've come to the conclusion there is unfortunately no "silver bullet" (cure/treatment/medication) for PSP. I've read two books written by wives of PSP patients that have passed on. It's interesting that they tell of all the things they tried to slow or stop PSP. Obviously none worked for them. However, it is nice to see what things have been tried and not worked. Since PSP is very individual to the patient I guess what doesn't work for one person MIGHT work or partially work for another. I've not given up but we'll not chase something that many others have tried and that there is NO reliable truth it has worked for anyone. For instance, I'm sure many patients have tried acupuncture and I've read their stories of failure so we'll opt to not do it. Trust me, if there were something that worked you'd be hearing about it over and over. You can however treat the symptoms (constipation, insomnia, urinary issues, and many others). That's my opinion and not necessarily fact.

Not what you're looking for?
