Morphine & Oramorph.

Hi all,

My dad is now bedridden with CBD. He appears to be in constant pain. Although he can't verbalise.

Codeine is no longer keeping him comfortable. Today the GP has prescribed morphine twice daily and Oramorph in between.

Has this proven to be an affective pain relief for others please. He already has regular

gabapentin and paracetamol

It feels like a no win situation, he is very sleepy on the codeine we are struggling for him to eat and drink. We are worried this will make him worse. But does this outweigh being comfy, just don't know.

I hate seeing him like this. It breaks my heart. He should still be enjoying life.

Any suggestions would be grateful.

Thank you 💜

Do you have your local hospice involve?

They are great in sorting appropriate pain relief out, I was talking to ours about my mums pain last week and they said there are patches which you can get which give medication all the time but this way is steady so there’s no high and low points.

Mum has CBD and PSP, but is still verbal to a degree and says the pain in her hand and leg is awful. So I won’t be surprised if he is in pain. Currently paracetamol isn’t doing it well for mum and she’s taking four doses of two every day.

Whilst it’s balancing act I think helping the pain is important, an you imagine being in pain all the time?

It’s so hard xx

Hi,We have the day hospice involved, they don't get involved with medication and intervention. It's just therapeutic. They have been amazing, but my dad can no longer attend.

I definitely know the pain needs to be under control. We just don't want him out for the count all the time. At the most he's awake (on and off) 90mins throughout the day.

The GP has prescribed slow releasing morphine. I wonder if they will be similar to the patches and administer a regular flow.

He's starting them today, so I guess time will tell.

It’s strange how different hospices work, as Mums is very helpful on all aspects of her care.

Hope there’s some improvement for your dads pain.

Hi I would say keeping dad comfortable is the main priority. If the morphine is working but making him sleepy it’s a better option than being in pain. You can also get it in slow release patches which I think are better it’s a more even pain relief. Take care at this difficult time 💜

We used oral morphine which is put in his cheeks every 4 hours and it completely took away all pain. We are US based so products may be different in UK. Ours was given to me under hospice. Please note the first 2 doses of oral morphine made my husband sleep. After that it did not make him sleepy at all. The nurse explained this is normal. He has passed away a couple weeks ago, so I'm no longer using it.

Thank you. Yes, very devastating. The hardest thing I've ever done in my life was to watch him decline and care for him all by myself. What a cruel disease!
