Hello all, my partner who has CBD, quite late stage is experiencing quite prolonged muscle contractions mostly at night lasting anything up to 1 hour. During this time he looks as if he’s in pain and he gets extremely hot and produces a lot of sweat.
I have one technique which is to add baclofen to fruit drink and try calming him down which usually works but takes some time.
I don’t seem to be able to find an answer from this and my neurology team seem to be unable to be contacted or to respond between appointments so not able to get professional advice.
Does anybody have experience of this? Ideally looking for an appropriate means of tackling it/any medicines which might be appropriate. Without doubt, this is debilitating, I believe painful to him and given his current body mass, expanding all of this energy clearly has a very negative impact.
Many thanks to all!

Hi - my dad had muscle stiffness and he was helped by Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levadopa) - the doctor started in very small doses and increased it slowly - plz check with his Neuro - best wishes
A couple others on this site have described a similar problem. They called the muscle spasms "clonus". You can look that up and read about it. If you search this site for "clonus" you can see a post by Al N. He said drug ropinirole helped. Maybe private message him for more information. I'm sorry to hear how distressing it is for your loved one. Hope this helps.
Dear Atomic55,my wife Maria suffers from a lot of continuous muscle contraction, and it happened for much more then an hour… with same result of heat and very pronounced sweating.
i have found no medicine that directly helps, but on the other-side have found that changing position (from lying on the back to side), bending legs, tickeling finger ends, etc xould stop the contractions. Also, although she is on wheel chair, she can stand on legs if fully held by someone, when standing, contractions stop. There is medication that indirectly helps, and in the case of my wife “seresta” (oxazepam) a tranquilliser, reduces a lot the contractions.
Hello Simon, thank you so much for your reply it’s very helpful tips and I’m gonna give them a try. This is very distressing for the person experiencing it and for those around them, carers another two see it. I have found that baclofen works with a regular dose up to 60 mL a day (that’s the maximum). Problem is that as the disease progresses baclofen becomes less effective. I have also found that talking and stroking seems to help the more that this is happening the more I’m finding out that this also has a beneficial effect.
Thank you and very best wishes to you and your wife.
