Hello everyone

Is there anything that helps with PSP swallowing/deglutition problems/Symptoms ?

Mashed food , little portions, and slowly drinking are always helpful, but Saliva is what causes most of my mother's daily choking struggles

Any pieces of advice to avoid that ?

THANKS

Hi Adamxd

Sadly this is a problem which will only increase. However we found the use of Atropine eye drops under the tongue helped. Botox injections can also help and finally Glycopyrrate helped in the latter stages of this devastating disease. Speak to your doctor and see if he can help with prescriptions.

Keep on keeping on

Hi

SCOPODERM patches helped a lot with my late husband’s swallowing problem and coughing! It moderates the saliva secretion and thus alleviated the coughing and swallowing.

It’s was suggested by the Hospice nurse thus, our GP prescribed it.

Best wishes

Mx

Hi. I am sorry to hear that your mother is suffering. My husband suffered the same problem. We were advised to use Pineapple juice as it can break the saliva up. It certainly helped for a while. Good luck. Big hug. AliBee xx

We’re in the pineapple phase now and it does seem to help some. I would like to take hubby back to Swallow therapy for a new assessment. About this time last year, after swallow therapy, hubby improved. I think it’s time that he be re-evaluated. Hubby doesn’t want to go back though and I’m not going to force the issue. Perhaps if the order comes directly from his doctor he may change his mind.

Good luck. One cannot make anyone do anything if they don't want to and it just causes agitation. Hopefully one day he will decide for himself he wants to attend. Big hug. AliBee x

Atropine under the tongue as already mentioned, we thicken liquids with Nutilis now at level 3. Airated liquids such a Lucozade work well as the bubbles aid swallowing - advised by Speech & Language Therapist. If thickening milk it thickens slower than others so prepare a little in advance.
