Hi, Can anyone share their experience of an elderly loved one addicted to morphine? My husband and I are trying to get his mothers GP to put in place a morphine withdrawal plan as his mother is having bad side effects of hallucinations and delirium, but the Gp is very slow and saying multiple care agencies involvement is necessary and they will do it. Its been 3 months and she only getting worse mentally, its very frustrating and we don't know what we can do to speed things up or who else we can request she is referred to........

Is your Mother Inlaw cared for in a facility or at home? Personally if I put in a request for a medicine change or stopped and nothing has happened in 3 months, I'd be finding a new GP. If there is social worker involved in her care talk to that person about your concerns. As her medical advocates you just need to be a "thorn in someone's side" till you get the answers/changes you are looking for.

Thank you so much for your reply.

She is cared for in her own home and yes you're right we need to be the thorn in her GPs side. We've got a meeting with the GP this week, and I've done a fair amount of reading regarding Morphine reduction and treatment plans. My Mil's needs are complex and she often herself negates what's best for her, and at other times isn't mentally aware period. Shall up date the post in due course.

Much appreciated.
