Touchdown!

Momma enjoyed watching one of her grandsons play some football today! She’s 95% wheelchair now, and I am trying my best to not let that get in our way. Although, we now only plan for 2 hours or less when we go out - Mom gets tired sooner these days.

Lovely photo. Getting out was so important to my husband it improved his mood, sleep and gave us something else to talk about when we were planning outings or reflecting on the day. Keep up the good work you are doing a sterling job

Love to you and your mom

Getting out changes her entire mood! Works every time - she was watching television, and I said, Momma you want to take a ride?” Instant smiles, and we ended up at the ball field!

When I read your post, before opening it and seeing the photo, I pictured in my mind me watching my family play football covered with mud in drizzling rain. I am in the U.K. 😁 It made me smile when I opened the post and saw dry you with such happy faces. Long may your mum keep her amazing smile XxxX

Things are changing ... I am

noticing her “checking out” when there are more than a couple people in the room talking; it’s overwhelming to her. She looks exhausted more often these past two weeks. I’m starting to worry she’s going to wake up and not be able to walk with my help - this morning her left leg was giving out on her ... so I’m trying to figure out what I am going to do next ... like even getting her in the shower! It’s all so overwhelming.

It is overwhelming, and running under it all is still a sense of denial: is this really happening? to MY momma?

At least on this site there is lots of info about transfer methods, shower chairs, etc etc.

And if you haven't already, startchecking out your options for Home Support (carers) as it will be inevitable she will need greater physical help - as will You! - to get the basics of toileting and bathing done.

I started with home support "a bit early" with hubby so I could get my TypeA Controller-First Class man used to the idea in stages, lol!

She always looks so happy thanks to what you do with her and how you look after her. John rarely smiles now and he has somehow chipped his front teeth and I don’t know how I am going to get him to the dentist . X

You're so good at making those 2 hours count though and am glad all 3 of you enjoyed the football game, beautiful smiles all round show that. Yes, your mum may be more exhausted but outings like this wear you out in a good way, that was my mum agreed last month after some birthday treats like the cinema. Can you try and focus on one or two worries at a time so they don't overwhelm you? I know it's all daunting and sorry I can't say anything more of a practical help. God bless.

How nice for her to enjoy the autumn, watching her grandsons play some football! Wheelchair time, while cumbersome, is good time -- enjoy it while you can. I think two hours sounds about right. My husband is now 100% in the power chair when we go out and while it is a wonderful chair, his energy really sags if we keep him out too long in it. Go Notre Dame! Go Ohio State! Go Northwestern!
