Prism glasses are a special made lens to compensate for some vision irregularity other then the normal far or near sighted issues. In PSP they are made to help with the lack of up and down eye movement in people.

Hubby wore prism glasses for a short time. They were supposed to help with double vision. The lenses/frames were expensive and his vision changed before he was able to really get used to them. In my opinion, due to the progression of the disease, I would not purchase them again. He’s having more spacial awareness issues now than he is with double vision. That’s just my two cents.

2 types a prism lens can be added to normal prescription glasses. Or a chunky pair simply for looking down a bit like a periscope in reverse!!! My hubby got a pair from PSPA which worked so well for him we bought other pairs from Amazon. My husband had less than 5% downward gaze and therefore could not see his food to feed himself. He wore the prism glasses for all meals and snacks they helped hugely with his independence. He struggled to use them for reading but when he did art therapy at the Hospice used them there too.

We tried stick on prisms on his ordinary glasses and this did not work at all for him.

Worth a try if there are probs with downward gaze. Though not for everyone.

Thanks for this! I wasn’t aware that there are prisms for up and down. We tried prisms for double vision and it just didn’t go well. At the time I remember thinking how “clunky” they were but had forgotten about that part. The glasses were expensive and I had my hopes up that they would help. It was worth a try because otherwise I would have kicked myself if it could have helped and we didn’t try it. So there’s that.

Hubby is colorblind and there’s a company called Encroma that make special lenses for people who can’t see color. It was awesome to witness hubby seeing color for the first time! Worth it! YouTube Encroma to see how they work. Amazing!

My hubby never had double vision just the loss of upward and downward gaze and tunnel vision.

So much of PSP is trial and error!!!!

Have never heard of the lenses to help colour blind see colour - wow my new fact of the day - thank you.

It’s really cool. Even if you aren’t colorblind the videos of people seeing color for the first time is amazing! It brought tears to my eyes and you know I can’t cry 😂

Prism glasses correct for double vision by introducing a wedge of glass in the prescription.

If you are looking for up/down gaze prism glasses and are based in the UK, please contact the PSP Association and they will be able to help you. Regarding prism glasses for double vision, these come from your optician

Mom's eye doctor said the prism glasses would not help her. But as you will discover every person is unique and we are left researching the disease & guessing what to do. Sending hugs... Granni B

I have the hallmark up and down gaze problem but also double vision and focus issues. My double vision is not because of one eye moving differently than the other. Rather each eye sees double by itself. The images are stacked one slightly above the other with overlap.

It’s impressive that you can type with double vision in both eyes. It just goes to show how uniquely the brain can find ways to work around such struggles. I admire your strength!

The top image is lighter and more shadow like. I look and try to focus mostly at the darker or more pronounced image on the bottom. The good thing is that both eyes have the same image. The bad thing is that it tells it is a brain processing problem and not a correctable eye problem.
