Searching for the best wheelchair ...

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everyone. I am trying to anticipate the need of a wheelchair for my Momma. While we were on our last two travel adventures, I depended a lot on a wheelchair for getting around; she uses her rollator to get around the house, and short distances. Tonight we went to see Mary Poppins Returns :) and had to walk a bit with her rollator, and I immediately missed the option for a wheelchair. Not sure why it hasn't dawned on me until now, but I need to begin looking for one ---- Would any of you have a strong recommendation on what I should be looking for? Appreciate your time advance. Blessings.

Talk with your doctor or other professionals for a proper fit for your mom, especially if she will be using it for longer periods of time. My mom needed different chairs as the PSP progressed.

Make sure it will fit through your doors & hallways. Be sure you can load it into your vehicle... some are heavier than others.

When l purchased my walker l went to a local medical pharmacy. The staff was very helpful & knowledgeable. Mine is a DRIVE. It is lightweight. It has a seat l can sit on when needed and a place under the seat for my purse. The best thing to me is it has flip down place for my feet so it can be pushed like a wheel chair... very safe. I call her my chariot. . . Best wishes in your search. Granni B

I agree with Granni B, get it through her medical team if possible for best fitting options. A good fit will go a long ways toward comfort. We used a typical wheelchair at first for dad outside the house and what's called a transport chair inside. Transport chairs are smaller and fit through a normal doorway. Dad never stayed in a wheelchair, in a recline or bed while at home, till the last 6-8 months and then he got a tilt back type wheelchair. The last month or so he was in a Brody medical chair, looked like a recliner on wheels.

Hi. I’m a community Matron. Please ask your gp for an urgent referral to occupational therapy for your mum. They can assess mums needs and then refer her to the wheelchair to have one made specifically for her needs. In the mean time you can’t rent one. Maybe try the Red Cross. X

Hi there my brother is going into 9 years with psp, from just a regular wheel chair, a transfer chair, finally had him fitted to a recliner tilt wheel chair, it is manual and not electric, as he could not control it, as they progress with this dreaded psp, wish we had gotten it a few years back they are fully padded so comfortable for them, even tho he is mostly bed bound at least when he is up it’s good, Nettie
