Help,

I have just started a new job in care, staff are giving personal care in a toileting sling. I feel this is undignified. I prefer to transfer to a bed which enables me to check for any pressure sores, also apply creams as directed. Does anyone out there agree with me!!!

Yes I certainly do. You need to check for pressures sores every time as they can sneak up when you don't expect them. One day. a person can be free of them and next have a sore or sores. They cause a patient great distress. My husband got very bad pressure sores after being confined to bed for 1 day!! Better to be safe than sorry?

Sounds like you are a caring person. Whoever has you take care of them is lucky to have such a decent person.

I agree! My son had a pressure sore (bed sore I was told). It was kept in check because every time his diaper was checked, ointment, Calmoseptine, was applied all over his bottom. Another one never appeared. The last five weeks of his life he was being fed and given liquids thro a PEG.

I think what you need to do is track down some 'best practice' policy.

What you are saying sounds good insofar as the need for checking pressure sores and applying creams go, but it strikes me that can be done in the bed after the sling is used?

When my Liz had respite almost a year ago they used a sling and not a turning stand as we do at home. In just one week her ability to stand on the turning stand had diminished markedly.

I hope this is helpful.

Wow! This brings up a whole new set of things or questions to think about. Is it possible to use a sling, yet do a bedsore check in bed on a daily basis. Sue is not at this point right now. She is in a wheelchair but can still stand and "walk" with full assistance to use the toilet. Some of my night caregivers change her pads or pullups while still in bed. I acquired a hoyer lift and sling through a garage sale for a fantastic price thinking I would be ahead of the issue. So, now I have my doubts.

What if you are unable to stand any weight at all.

The weapon does get use to using a sling and hoist . Believe me I know I have been amangung for five years doing it.

I can see all I need to see to cleanse and moisturise , sometime while hoisted other times. By sittinon a low stool while he is still say in commode chair .

I have made a shelf under the pan once finishes remove the pan and place a mirror and small light ,

This way. I can see everyone I meds to see cleanse dry and moisterise ,

I line th bed or chair with puppy pads no need of continence pads then. Less stressful on the bottom no sores . I use belanthem. To moisterise .
